This has been done on more than one occasion since the advent of television. It can be done again. In the case of the two presidential candidates of 1976, this seems highly unlikely, however. As politicians go, we would classify them as low- keyed individuals who just might win voter appeal by what they have to say rather than the way they say it. K.A.F. MANY AREA Set Theme For Clean Water Qjroup Discussion The selectio/i and testing of agricultural sites to see how they affect vfater pollution in northeastern Illinois will be the principal item of discussion Aug. 26 at the meeting of the McHenry County Local teering committee. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Algonquin village hall, 2 South Main street Anyone interested in the effects of agricultural practices on water pollution is invited to attend. The committee of McHenry county officials and citizens is one of several in the region working with the Northeastern Illinois Planning commission (NIPC) to develop an area- wide plan for controlling water pollution in the region. The plan is mandated under Section 208 of the Federal Water Pollution Control act Amendments of 1972. The McHenry county com mittee is responsible for in volving local governments and citizens from the county in the project and for insuring that problems of the Fox river and other waterways in the county are addressed in the area-wide plan. Johnson of 31 Glenwood drive, Round Lake Beach, was injured Sunday about noon when she crested a hill and attempted to stop for a sign at the intersection of Wilmot road and Oeffling drive, Pistakee Highlands. Ms. Johnson reported she was traveling west on Oeffling and as she crested a hill, saw a stop sign but was unable to halt in time. The car slid through the sign, hit a tree, a telephone junction box and a guide wire for a utility pole. Scott W. Walker of 3021 W. Crescent avenue, McHenry, received slight injuries Sunday evening about 8:45 when he was involved in an auto accident on River road, about one-half mile north of Fernview drive, near Fernwood subdivision Walker told county police he was traveling north on River road when an unidentified vehicle approached from the south and crossed into his lane of traffic. He ran off the road to avoid a collision and lost control of his vehicle. Seventeen-year-old Robert J. Mclnnis of 5123 W. Lake Shore drive. Wonder Lake, was in jured Saturday morning about 1:30 after he fell asleep while driving his auto on Route 120 near Thompson road, west of Wonder Lake The auto rolled over after it ran off the east side of the highway and came to rest on its top. Mclnnis was taken to Memorial hospital, Woodstock, by the Woodstock Rescue squad A car driven by Scott A. Meacham of 955 Sheffield drive. Crystal Lake, was demolished Saturday night about 10:15 following a one-car accident on Route 31, south of Johnsburg road at the cement bridge. Meacham stated he was south-bound on the highway passing a vehicle in front of him when suddenly he heard a "popping" noise and lost control of the car. Deputies noted the left front tire of Meacham^s auto was deflated after the accident. A two-car collision took place Sunday afternoon near the intersection of River road and Sutton court, Emerald Park subdivision County police reported Ricky L Lively of 2608 S Forestwood drive. McHenry, was passing a north-bound auto in front of him on River road when he hit a car driven by Robert C. Sroka of 115 S Emerald drive. McHenry. Sroka was stopped on Sutton court preparing to make a right turn onto River when impact took place. Robert R Ripley of 6917 S. Archer, Chicago, was ticketed for failure to give information after striking unattended vehicle or property following a one-car accident at the in tersection of Center street and Lake Shore drive, Wonder Lake. Saturday evening According to the accident report, Ripley was driving west on Center street at a fast speed when he skidded into a tree. He then left the scene, but with the assistance of witnesses deputies apprehended him about fifteen minutes later. Neither Ripley nor his passengers, John E McMillan of 7507 Center street, Wonder Lake, or Michael A. Kuba of 7241 S. Maplewood, Chicago, were injured in the mishap. Jeanne Schaefer of 4315 W. Crystal Lake road. McHenry, was charged with failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle. She struck a parked car in the VFW McHenry and Lake county arts organizations received a total of $12,805 in grants from the Illinois Arts council. At its July meeting in Edwardsville, the council gave a total of $714,442 to 264 arts organizations around the state In McHenry county, the Woodstock Fine Arts association received three grants. A total of $2,000 was granted to aid in the establish ment of professional children's theatre company at the recently restored Woodstock Opera House. The troupe will present four productions and take a fifth production on tour in the area. A $575 grant was given to the Fine Arts association for the McHenry county honor concert and stage bands. The funds will be used to help pay professional conductors and a program director. The Fine Arts association was also given $400 to establish an arts calendar for McHenry county. The ten-issue publication will have listings of arts events in sixteen com munities. In the largest McHenry coun ty grant, $7,000 was awarded to the City of Woodstock for parking lot at 3002 W. Route 120 last Thursday night. According to the Sheriff's report, Mrs. Schaefer hit a car owned by Paul Nitz of 3220 W. Skyway drive, McHenry, and then left the scene. Mrs. Linda Nitz witnessed the accident and Mrs. Schaefer was located later that night. A car driven by Lawrence J. O'Donnell of 209 Grove, Woodstock, went out of control while south-bound on Draper road, about one-half mile north of Bull Valley road, and ran into a field. The accident oc curred Saturday evening about 6:15. O'Donnell reported he was attempting to maneuver an "S" curve when he drove onto the shoulder and lost control of his vehicle A ticket for failure to yield right-of-way was issued to Marlene K. Krabbenhoft of 1210 Goodview, McHenry, by city police. She was injured in the mishap and taken to McHenry hospital by the rescue squad for treatment. A passenger in the other car, Robert G. Jackson of 25 Jamaca, Fox Lake, was also injured and taken for treat ment. Louis H. Weller of 4018 Mc- Cullom Lake road, McHenry, told city police he was east- bound on Elm street when the Krabbenhoft auto pulled out of the Ace Hardware parking lot and he was unable to avoid impact. Ms Krabbenhoft reported that a pickup truck had stopped in traffic and waved her across the road. She pulled out and was hit. Both drivers were injured in a rear-end collision that oc curred Saturday night about 6:30 on Route 31, about one mile south of Route 12, near Rich mond. Alfred B. Miller of 6707 Route 31, Richmond, and the other driver, Terry B. Hicks of 19401 Bunker Hill road, Woodstock, were taken to area hospitals by the Richmond Rescue squad They were discharged following treatment. According to the report, Hicks came upon the Miller pickup truck as he rounded a curve. He started to pass the truck when he looked in his rear view mirror and saw a vehicle in back of him passing his car. He swerved back into his lane and hit the rear of Miller's truck James T. Grothman suffered face and head injuries and bruises on the legs and arms as the result of a one-car accident Monday It occurred at 11:20 p.m. on Rt 120, west of Sale Barn road, Volo Grothman, of 5428 W. West Shore, McHenry. was driving west when he fell asleep His car traveled into a ditch and struck a culvert. State police who investigated said he was taken to McHnery hospital financial assistance in hiring a professional director to manage the Woodstock Opera House, and to establish an Arts council to serve McHenry county. The council's grant-making process operates through arts institutions in the state, and grants are not made to an in dividual artist. However, the council works to bring artists and institutions together such that an artist's idea could be executed and administered with the help of an arts organization. *95,500 In Grants For Conservation The McHenry County Con servation district is among three areas in the county to receive $204,937 in state con servation money to help pay for 268 acres of local parkland, according to Department of Conservation Director Tony Dean. The McHenry County Con servation district was awarded three grants totaling $95,500 toward the purchase of 104 acres. Two sites of 54 and 10 acres are contiguous to the Rush Creek Conservation area located southeast of Harvard. The other site of 40 acres is located near the Kishwaukee Conservation area southwest of Union. All three sites are planned expansions of existing natural areas. Activities range from hiking and nature trails to primitive camping. In all, there were three of thirty-eight Illinois com munities and agencies awarded land acquisition grants by the Department of Conservation this week. The grants will help purchase over 2,600 acres for city parks, playgrounds, forest preserves and other outdoor recreation areas, according to Dean.^-^ j Health Systems Agency Will Meet The Health Systems agency for Kane, Lake and McHenry counties, Inc., will be holding its regular monthly board of directors meeting Thursday, Aug. 26, beginning at 7 p.m. It will be held at the corporate office, 400 South Old Rand road Lake Zurich. The Health Systems agency has been designated by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to provide health planning ser vices for the residents of Kane, Lake and McHenry counties. Edward H. Tonyan, Jr., of 1406 N. Palomino, McHenry, was reported dead on arrival at McHenry hospital, Monday, Aug. 23. He was 40 years of age. A native of the McHenry area, Mr. Tonyan was born to Edward W. and Hannah (Glosson) Tonyan Dec. 14, 1935. , The deceased was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and was employed as superintendent of a local construction company. Survivors are his widow. Janice (Oeffling), whom he married in Johnsburg April 7, 1956; three children at home, Michael, Thomas and Cynthia; his parents of McHenry; a brother, John J., of McHenry and grandmother, Mrs Elizabeth Tonyan, Pistakee Bay. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Boat Collision On River Causes Injuries, Damage A boat collision on the Fox river near Algonquin at the Turner Camp beach resulted in extensive damage to two boats and injuries to two persons. The crash occurred Friday night about 8:30. According to the accident report, Joseph R. Keller of 83 Golfview road, Carpentersville, was traveling along the Fox river in his 14-foot outboard motorboat when he hit an anchored boat. The craft was owned and occupied by Richard E. Burke of 1639 Heather avenue, Algonquin. A passenger in Keller's craft, David Poore, suffered a broken left arm and Keller himself was treated for shock. Willig. died Friday, Aug. 20, at Presbyterian St. Luke's hospital. Chicago, at the age of 78. Mr Willig was born in Ft. Wayne, In., May 16, 1898, the son of August and Sophie (I)irig) Willig. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic church and past president of the Holy Name society of that church. The World War I veteran of the Rainbow division was a member of the Young at Heart club. Wonder Lake. He also belonged to both the McHenry and Wonder Lake Senior Citizens club. The deceased was past president and thirty- five vear member of Siberbian Post'No. 1705, VFW. Survivors are his widow, Elenora with whom he celebrated twenty-five years of marriage Jan. 27; two sons, James of Des Plaines and Richard of Racine, Wi.' two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Leonat Stibeck, Racine, Wi., and Mrs. Joseph (Betty) Haubner, Columbus, Oh.; four brothers; two sisters; twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frieda (Brehm) in 1950, two brothers and a sister. Visitation was held Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon at the Halms Wonder Lake funeral home with the rosary recited at 8 p.m. Sunday. Mass was offered Monday morning at Christ the King Catholic church with burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests Masses or donations to the Wonder Lake Fire department and Rescue squad.
