She couldn't bear to look at herself. In contrast, a mother developed the habit of keep­ ing a diary of compliments. For example, if her 4-year-old said, "You're the best Mommy in the world!" she wrote it down as a keepsake. She treasured the nice things people said about her. In these women, we see both self-hate and self-love. Actually, if you can't love yourself, you can't begin to love anyone else. Jesus taught us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. This is often interpreted to mean, "Love your neighbor instead of yourself." But that isn't what Jesus said. He said to love others as we love ourselves. But we are so saturated with the idea of self-denial that we feel guilty about loving ourselves. So let's distinguish be­ tween self-acceptance and self-centeredness. To love any­ one is to love that person as he is (not the way we'd like him to be). Likewise, if 1 love myself, I must accept myself. This means accepting my age, my sex, my parents, my body, my mind, my personality. True, I can improve on such features as my personality. But I can't wait until I change to start loving myself. Otherwise, I'll never change. Self-acceptance is a virtue; self-centeredness is a vice. The Bible confirms what modern psychology has discov­ ered: Without self-love there can be no love for others. We can not give what we do not possess. In his essay, "The Acceptance of Oneself," the Catholic Philosopher Romano Guardini said: The act of self-acceptance is the root of all things. I must agree to be the person who I am Agree to have the qualifi­ cations which I have. Agree to live within the limitations set for me ....
