v-> PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER It, 1976 John Doherty, Jr. was looking through some things left by his late grandfather, Martin Smith, and found the above picture taken Aug. 14, 1916. For those who wouldn't remember, you reached the diamond by going down the hill on Third St. from Waukegan St. near where the old standpipe stood in all its majesty for many years. There was a driveway through the Owen property near Landmark School. Following is the story of the White Sox visit as copied by Marie Yegge from the Plaindealer files; Wednesday proved a big day for this live old town. Besides entertaining the Chicago White Sox baseball club, we also bid welcome to some ten hundred fans, who came to assist Mc Henry in greeting the boys who are fighting for the American league flag. Altho threatening clouds were visible thruout the entire day. the weather man displayed his consideration for Mc Henry by allowing the day to pass by without as much as a sprinkle from the clouds, all of which helped swell the day's crowd as well as to enrich the treasury of the McHenry baseball club to the extent of $100, as this is about the amount which will be cleared after all bills are paid. Our distinguished guests arrived as per schedule on the 10:18 train. They were met at the depot by Manager Walsh, members of the McHenry baseball club and quite a number of our citizens. They were then escorted to the McHenry House, where they made their headquarters during their stay in McHenry. A boat ride on the river took up the visitors' time until dinner time, when the boys sat down to a dinner that had been prepared and served to a queen's taste. The boys surely did enjoy the eats. The afternoon crowd began to arrive shortly after the noon hour and from that time until three o'clock the ticket sellers were kept on the jump. There just didn't seem to be an end to the automobiles, and the manner in which they filed into the grounds between the hour of 2:00 and 2:30 was surely pleasing to McHenry's popular manager, as well as our people in general. The Chicago team arrived at the park early and for an hour before the game was called gave the spectators an ex cellent opportunity of seeing them in their daily work-out. The big fellows went thru all the preliminary work usually performed before the big league games, which as an added attraction they went thru a five-minute work-out at shadow ball, which was greatly enjoyed by everyone. The game itself proved just exactly as advertised, an exhibition contest between one of the best teams in the world and a fast amateur team. While no one expected to see McHenry win, we believe that the spectators were well , satisfied with what they saw, as the game was such as to give the Chicago team opportunities to show every fine point known to the national pastime. They fielded perfectly, hit the ball hard and "pulled" just enough of the comedy to keep the 1,000 fans good natured. All told the event was one grand success and proved the biggest of the kind that every occurred in McHenry. Great credit is due to Richard B. Walsh, manager of the McHenry team, for this event, as it was due principally thru his untiring efforts and acquaintance with the owners of the Chicago team than made the undertaking a possibility and we dare say that once more this little old town received advertising that cannot be reckoned by dollars and cents and the Plaindealer for one feels elated to know that we •have among us a young man capable to seeing a thing of this kind successfully thru and we extend our heartiest congratulations. Then, too, those who con tributed towards the guarantee fund of $500 are also to be congratulated upon their en terprising spirit. Owing to the fact that our space is very limited this week, we will not give a story of the game, but trust that the fans will be satisfied with looking over the tabulated score which herewith follows: Lapp,c. In Your Garden Property spaced shade trees can help prevent home air conditioners from working overtime in scorching weather. "We need to take a second look at plants as temperature control devices," says George Young, University of Illinois Extension adviser in McHenry county. "Trees planted near a house not only help you save on utility bills but also contribute to energy conservation." Air conditioners don't need to run as often if the sun doesn't beat down on the house all day. Young explains. Shade trees partly shield the roof and keep the sun's rays off the walls in the morning and1 afternoon because twigs, branches, leaves, and trunk partly absorb and reflect the radiation. The amount of radiation that gets through depends on denisty of the tree's canopy. For example, the canopy of a honey locust will transmit more radiation and thus give less shade than that of a burr oak of equal size. But the honey locust is a faster growing tree and is usually more popular with homeowners. Large shade trees also provide refuge for people who wish to sit outdoors on a hot day, Young adds. An actively growing tree transpires large quantities of moisture into the atmosphere. If the wind isn't blowing too strongly or if the trees are protected from winds by a shelter belt, this tran spiration can result in in creased humidity within the tree canopy. Since moist air doesn't heat as rapidly as dry air, this helps to keep tem peratures under a tree moderate. "September is a good time to think about where you would be better off if someone had planted trees twenty years ago, you can still increase your comfort, and the value of your home with tree plantings now."
