Bond set at $1,000. court HELPING PAWS Bv Estelle Atwell Know any Ugly Americans9 Probably you do. They are in our midst, and the way to recognize them is by their misdeeds When motivated by hate, or entirely by self- interest, people commit some thoroughly reprehensible acts against animals. Usually these acts are accomplished sneakily so the perpatrator remains anonymous, and in the eyes of the world ~ a decent human being Sometimes, though, there is a witness. A young boy, one day, saw a car carrying a man and a dog. The man stopped the car on the street. The boy observed the man remove something from the dog's neck, open the car door, shove the dog out, and then drive away leaving the dog behind. The boy saw the bewildered dog standing in the street not knowing in which direction to run. He felt sorry for the dog and took it to his neighbor's house, knowing that lady liked dogs and hoping she would know what to do. However she had a dog of her own and the two dogs did not get along. So she called Animal Control hoping they would pick up the dog and try to locate its owner. The Animal Control officer picked up the dog, and held it. Meanwhile, the actual owner of the dog (not the man in the car) was trying to locate his pet. Two days later when he called the Animal Control center to see if they had picked up his dog, he was told they had a dog that looked like the one he described but it wore no identification The owner, who lived many miles from the spot where the dog was found by the boy, went to Animal Control, recognized his pet, and was reunited with a very happy dog. Now, to get back to the villain of the story - it was learned that a neighbor of the owner was mad at the dog, had picked it up, drove it many miles away, removed the identification tags, and dumped the dog. A decent human being? You be the judge. Helping Paws maintains an office, phone 459-2641, hours 10 to noon, and 1 to 3 daily.
