Bill Mauck brings to his performance as Ernest Hemingway an exciting per­ sonal background. Mauck was born in Honolulu. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor he joined the Merchant Marines and was almost immediately selected to represent the "typical" Merchant Seaman for a series of documentary films. These films were written and produced by the award winning movie script writer, Robert Russell. After his discharge from the service Mauck attended the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York. In 1973, while recovering from a serious illness, he became fascinated with the life and writing of Ernest Hemingway. He wrote and produced a one- man play for the Tribute to Hemingway committee of Oak Park on the occasion of the Nobel Prize winning author's seventy-fifth anniversary. The play was an instant success. It is entertaining, authentic and Mauck's startling resemblance to Hemingway all contribute to the many requests for repeat performances. Ernest Hemingway lived life in hand-to-hand combat with death -with joy and gusto. Hemingway fought mankind's common enemy. "That Day In July" tells his story and his final destruction by the ancient adversary, death. Bill Mauck, with incredible insight, cap­ tures the mood of Hemingway.
