Kathi George, chairman of this project for the association's community service project, said all children 1-6 are urged to take part in this screening-a free program with the results given immediately. Though contacts have been made with many day care centers, a great many pre schoolers will not have been contacted in any manner, and so their knowledge of this testing must come through news stories in newspapers and on radio, she stressed. Parental permission forms can be filled out at the time of testing, although children in the day care or pre-school programs may receive them through Kathi's advance contacts. Walk-ins are encouraged, she continued. The mobile van will be located at the test sites, and qualified personnel will con duct the testing. The van is operated by the Illinois Association for the Retarded, and the van is made possible through the financial assistance of the Illinois Knights of Columbus and their local councils. Tom Gollan, director of children's services for the McHenry County Association for the Retarded, called at tention to the fact that "lead poisoning knows no economic or social barriers." While it is often considered a problem affecting only the poor and people living in slums, that is not true, he said, adding: Children put things in their mouths such as paper and toys. Lead from auto exhausts is another source of lead poisoning."
