SECTION 2 - PAGE 2 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29,1976 HELPING PAWS. Bv Estelle Atwell There's no rule in th*? etiquette book for introducing a cat to the dog you already have. If there was -- it would be cool it, go slow, have patience, watch the dog's reactions, watch the cat's reactions, provide places for separation of the two if necessary, give it time to work, and after you get the green light go ahead and leave them together. We consulted one of the Helping Paws personnel, a soft hearted friend of animals. about this ticklish matter. She has had pleftty of experience running to the aid of distressed cats, dogs, squirrels -- anything with four paws, and many times has brought abandoned or lost animals to her home to join her own pets. Recently she tamed a wild kitten and brought it home. Her com mitment stretches beyond first aid to the animals, it extends to satisfactory provision for them -good health and a good home. Unless a person has more than a smidgen of patience and tolerance and can persist through a training period with its little difficulties, it's a mere sham to bring a cat or kitten home based on the premise of discarding it if the dog and cat do not have instant rapport. If the dog doesn't exhibit tea party manners to his new roomie; if the cat hisses in fright; you don't have to call the whole thing off. Give them a little time to get acquainted. When you bring the cat home Come in and browse, you'll get ideas for furnishing* your bath and discover many charming gifts. DR. One of the twenty-five puppies now available at the county shelter, 11608 Banford road, Woodstock. There's a range from 3 to 6 months in age, and a wide variety of types, colors, males and females. So choose your favorite. (PHOTOCOM PHOTO) a few simple mechanics are in order. Provide a box of some sort with a top that closes and holes or mesh inserts for air. It could be a cardboard carton you improvise as a cat carrier. Usually, a cat does not like to ride in a car. Some will pant and get glazed eyes; some hug the windows trying to get out; some meow loudly. Some few will enjoy it. That's why our bnstmas Helping Paws worker recommends a box so that the risk of the cat leaping out of your arms or out of the car is avoided. Episode 2 - the actual meeting of the dog and cat. Some hints from our Helping Paws worker should prove helpful. We'll pass them along next week. Helping Paws maintains an office open from 10 to noon and 1 to 3, Monday through Friday. POSTAGE SCALESOFF Customers of the U.S. Postal Service in downstate Illinois have less than a 50-50 chance of getting both accurate weight measurement and correct postage assessment according to a study by Gov. Walker's Consumer Advocate Celia Maloney. An on-the-spot survey of thirty downstate post offices showed that consumers are overcharged for postage 27 percent of the time.
