Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc tober 28, 1926) H e t t e r m a n n B r o s . , proprietors of the Central garage at Johnsburg, announce the opening of a new salesroom and service station in West McHenry, for the handling of Chevrolet cars. The Matt Laures building, now occupied by John F. Knox as a restaurant, has been secured and it will be remodelled to fit the needs of the new occupants. The place will be known as Hettermann Motor Sales. The Seniors are busy making plans for the annual. At a class meeting held on Monday the matter of a class gift was taken up, the class decided in favor of purchasing a trophy case. The Junior class has picked out their class play, which is to be presented on Dec. 8. They are now busy working on the many parts. The class is anxiously- waiting the arrival of the class rings which are expected to arrive any day. Work on Route 20 has con tinued throughout the week with cement being poured nearly every day, although the very cold nights necessitated a late start in the morning as it is one of the requirements of the state that cement cannot be laid when the temperature is near freezing The concrete now extends as far as the Cossman home. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc tober 29, 1936) This locality has the distinction of having the only waterway mail route in the state of Illinois, with summer residents along the river and on Pistakee Lake receiving their mail daily via the river route. For the past eight years tooooooooooooooooor William Schaefer has been in charge of this service to summer residents and from June first to September 15 he makes daily trips, with the exception of Sundays and holidays, covering about 22'2 mi\<fs daily. The service is increasing each year with about 150 patrons on the list this year as compared to about 125 last year and it is expected that still more will be added next season to lengthen the route and time required. Fire which broke out in the orchestra pit at the Bridge ballroom Monday evening broke up the dinner dance in honor of Leo Dailey, candidate for state senator, sponsored by the Democrats of Lake, McHenry and Boone counties, causing considerable damage to the popular recreation center. From the excitement of competition in a sham battle, when balloons popped like guns along the battle front, to the intense and quiet interest of the story hour, sitting enthralled around a camp fire, and the deep reverence of the closing benediction and sounding of taps, the several sides of a boy's character were evidenced Monday evening when over 100 Boy Scouts of Division One gathered at the McHenry Community high school for a pre-Halloween rally and* one of their customary get-togethers. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 1, 1951) Keep McHenry Ahead! That is the slogan adopted by the McHenry Business Men's association, members of which are determined that the city will progress and grow as it has in the past. In keeping with the slogan, one of the association's first interests is to make McHenry "shine" through new and modern street lights. To assist the numerous pledges of cash by individual business men, members hope to un dertake a successful paper and scrap metal drive to pay for the balance of the cost of the new mercury vapor street lights in the business sections of Riverside Drive, Green, Elm and Main streets. Sunday, Nov. 4, has been set as the date for observance of the diamond anniversary of McHenry's Zion Lutheran congregation. Two services will be held, the morning service at 10:15 in Zion Lutheran church, 408 John street, with pastor Henry Heise of McCullom Lake formerly pastor at Redeemer church, Waukegan, delivering the address. The afternoon service will be held in the McHenry high school auditorium at 3 p.m., with Pastor Theo. Nickel of Chicago, first vice-president of the Northern Illinois district of the Lutheran church, Missouri Synod, as guest speaker. The McHenry Warriors thrilled a large hometown crowd as they edged Delavan 20-16. The win enabled the Warriors to move into un disputed possession of second place in the Swani conference. The Warriors also climaxed an unbeaten home season. In a lovely but simple nuptial service which took place in St. Mary's church at 10 o'clock last Saturday morning, Oct. 20, Evelyn Hart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Justen, became the bride of Mr. Jerome R. Steinback of McCullom Lake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steinback of Chicago. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 3, 1966) McHenry voters will join thousands throughout the state in going to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 8, to elect An Open Letter to the Voters of the 33rd Legislative District: On June 2, 1976 and again on Sept. 1/ 1976, L.S. Clemens, Executive Editor of the Daily Courier-News Elgin, published statements that strongly oppose Representative Hanahan for reelection in the 33rd Legislative District. He revealed Mr. Hanahan's income for last year and the sources from which it was derived. Mr. Hanahan reported the information, as required by the Federal Landrum-Griffin Act, so they must be reasonably accurate. He received $47,000 aggregate salaries from two separate labor unions, $30,000 for campaign purposes from a labor union sponsored dinner and $32,000 for legislator's salary and expenses as representative from the 33rd Legislative District. I am not opposed to a representative keeping contact with his former employers, nor do I propose that a representative should be required to give up everything that he owns to become an elected official. Because of the sources of his income, I wonder for whom he is working. I believe that a man has to work rather hard to earn $77,000 and I think our legislators should work first and foremost for their district. His lack of concern for the environment and his opposition to a conflict-of-interest law for elected officials are areas which need dedicated legislative action. Here Mr. Hanahan has shown antagonism. Is he too busy with his principal income to be interested in these higher priorities? On November 2 voters in the 33rd district will have an opportunity to remove him from office. Ron Stroupe of Huntley is running in opposition and I believe would provide thoughtful representation for both Republicans and Democrats in the 33rd District, as well as the state of Illinois. I urge Democrats to vote for Ron Stroupe and implore Republicans to vote one or more of their votes for Stroupe. The two Republicans running can be elected easily if Republicans give one vote each to the Republican candidates. We will all gain thoughtful representation if we care enough to split our votes. The 2 Republican and 1 Democratic candidate representation in the legislative district will remain as it is at present, and will in no way«be threatened. Please vote for better representation in the whole district by including a vote for Ron Stroupe this election day. Thank You, Chester Keeney McHenry, III. Paid by Citizens for Stroupe, Huntley representatives to fill county, state and federal offices. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Three fires and other van dalism were reported in the McHenry area on Halloween night. A shed on Draper road used as a shelter for children awaiting the school bus was started on fire and destroyed according to Fire Chief Ed Justen. For the third time this season the Warriors couldn't find the scoring touch on their home field The only scoring in this fiercely fought battle came early in the first quarter when Libertyville first got their hand on the ball. Libertyville won 7 to 0. The McHenry Harriers placed eleventh in the state district meet on Mundelein course. Warren Kuhlman of Tonyan C o n s t r u c t i o n c o m p a n y , McHenry, was installed as president of the Fox Valley G e n e r a l C o n t r a c t o r s association at their annual membership meeting held at Q. My neighbor has an an nual termite inspection even though his home was treated only two years ago. Is this necessary, and what is the advantage if you don't have termites? A. If termites are properly barricaded f r o m t h e structure by the chemi cal in the initial treat ment, there is little like lihood that they will do extensive dam age through re-infestation in less than a year. An inspec tion is still important, how ever, even in the first year after treatment. You may find most annual inspections are made during the fall or winter months. Even though termites are more active in warm months, they may be detectable in the winter. If your home has never been treated for termites, an annual inspection may ease any concern you may have even though your home may not be currently infested. An inspection should be systematic, moving method ically through the structure in order not to skip an area. Special attention should be given to any area of excessive the Chicago Title and Trust, Geneva. The week of Nov. 6 to 12 has been declared American Education Week by Gov. Kerner, when school ad ministrators, board members and faculty hope residents of the area will attempt to attend the schools and learn the many fine, exciting programs being presented. moisture showing newly con structed mud tubes, old mud tubes not previously removed, old evidence of infestation or damage, wood in direct con tact with the ground, settling or shifting of foundation, stoops, slabs, etc., plus areas not previously treated. Entry points may be undetectable in inaccessible areas. Inspection may indicate treatment or re-treatment in certain areas is necessary or that there are structural de ficiencies you should repair as a preventive measure. It should also be noted that if your structure has been treated, and you have made any addition such as: new porch, garage slab, fin ished basement, or if the treated soil around these areas has been disturbed by gardening or erosion, you must make arrangements for inspection and treatment to continue the protection of your home or business against termites.
