PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. DECEMBER S. It7« 1 m. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR A QUICK SAVE-and Barb Rom me of the MCHS girls vanity volleyball team returns the ball over the net. McHeary won this flrat match by a 20-18 icore, but Dundee bounced back to win the remaining games. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Now comes a Lawrence Welk book, My America, Your America. Must get at that one right away. Nice gift for one addicted to the Welk shows. Maybel baseball's free agent draft will work out after all our moaning. Just take those Yankees. They certainly needed help against the Big Red Machine in the World Series. 'Tis said you can't buy a pennant. Time will tell. We know you parents have fed your boys well. How else could we have so many 6 foot- plus boys to look up to? But, can't somebody find a new formula that will bring Coach Ludwig a 6'9" center? One real big fellow would have led our Warriors all the way to Champaign last year. It's against all rules to lure star athletes into your district, but if that one big guy ever gets near our district line I hope he steps across. People are singing that old song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" these days and with good reason. Florida papers are probably playing up this Chicago area weather this week. All we can say is that we haven't had to spray those pesky mosquitoes in some time. This column would be finished if Channel 5 hadn't come on the screen with that tense scene at 51st and Halsted where would-be robbers held hostages and threatened to kill them. Russ Ewing was the man of the hour as he spent hours talking the bad men out of their plans. Hostages and their relatives won't sleep well tonight. Guns get into the wrong hands, but nobody will ever come up with an answer to that problem. Too bad that a life is taken so lightly Guess it is time to think about Christmas. And shopping! • > * POWER-LIFTERS AT EAST CAMPUS-The power weight lifting t*am from Thornton High School, Harvey, Illinois put on a weight lifting exhibition at East Campus on November 18. Highlighting tl|e exhibition was a dead lift of 445 lbs. by the instructor, Mr. JSmes Kreske. Approximately 60 East Campus students, who are interested in weight lifting, attended the performance. Weight lifting is a new co-cutricular activity at East Campus this year. TRAVEL by & REINDEER? No, Not Really BUT A TRAVEL GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR CHRISTMAS! Patty Osborn Galdos of 4719 West Crystal lake Road brought down a 9-Inch spike buck, showing the men in the party how It is done. Patty was one happy girl as sbe came to the Plalndealer sports desk to report her good fortune. She wears a smile that won't come off. 1978-77 WINTER SPORTS SCHEDULE 385-7500 CHAIN 0 LAKES SERVICE 3405 W. Elm St McHenty TRAVEL McHenry High, School 4724 W. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) u * IN CONFERENCE OPENER TONIGHT-The McHenry Warriors are ready and they travel to Barrington to take on the strong Broncos. The season is just beginning, but they have one trophy in their bid for another winning season. Standing, from left, are Kevin Agullana, Doug Oeffling, Bill Hurckes, Marty Deener, Brian Miller, Dave Kotiw, A1 Reinboldt, Dave Pliner, Mark Mayer, Ken Durkln, Randy Schiller. Barry Paulson, Jeff Partenheimer, Marty Phillips, Tim Byers, Sean Thomas and Steve Knox. Kneeling are manager Rich Talbot, trainer Earl Cooper, Coach Ken Ludwig and manager Hans Heidler. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warrior Cagers Open At Barrington Gym Tonight In Conference Opener By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig will take his McHenry High Warriors to Barrington to open the North Suburban season tonight. The Broncos under new head coach Gary Cook, formerly of Rockford East, currently are 4 and 0 on the season, and won their own Thanksgiving tourney last week defeating highly regarded Elgin Larkin 51 to 50. For the past three seasons the Broncos played under 500 ball, but this year with all the regular returning and a new coach have seemed to turn their program around to being winners. Returning to the Bronco lineup are seniors. Brad Sin clair a 6'5" forward, 6'5" Brian Oliver another forward, sophomore 6'4" John Tomlinson, and at the guards 6'0" senior Bill Evans and 6'4" Craig Terrill. Also Coach Cook can call upon seven other players who saw action at some time or another during the 1975- 76 season. The Broncos are really loaded, their only problem the past few seasons had been their inability to get along--with the coach. It seems that this problem has been solved( and look for the Barrington five to be in the thick of the conference race. The Warriors now 2 and 1 for the season, will become a good ball club, but they will have to overcome the inexperience that exists on the squad. Last years SUPER SEC TIONAL squad was dominated by seniors, and the young Warriors are bound to take their lumps, until they get adjusted to playing together throughout the season. They defeated Rochelle and Naperville North before bowing to Kaneland in the finals of the King Korn tourney Sycamore last Saturday night Tip off is at 8:00 p.m. at Grapplers Host Barrington Tonight Wrestling fans will have an opportunity to watch the McHenry High "Rassling Warriors" engage the Broncos of Barrington tonight at 6:30 p.m< at West Campus. Coach Marty Sobczak's Warriors will host the Barrington team in a North Suburban dual meet. If you have never seen a high school wrestling meet, I suggest you come to West Campus tonight. You won't be disappointed. Al May. a tower of strength while attending Marian High, is now in his junior year at North Park college. At 6*5", Al is a starting forward. INDOOR TENNIS Indoor tennis is being offered at McHenry West campus gym Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. For reservations call West campus R e f l e c t t h a t l i f e , l i k e every other blessing, Derives its value from its use alone. -Samuel Johnson.
