On The Sidelines ; fey Die* RabtoWt f" Well the high school football has finally ended. The crystal ball got stuck again and 80 percent was the best I ' could do in the finals. My old college buddy, Don Kemp of Concord Triopa, let me down when his team was walloped by Hampshire 47 to 6 in the Class IA finals. Although Triopa outweighed Hampshire by over 20 lbs. per man, the team from the Pundee district proved that size doesn't mean a thing when it comes to championship games. All of the Championship games were played in bad weather. T.V. again dominated the play, for in the final game of the Class 5A championship six timeduta were called for a commercial. Rumors are that in the future the I.H.S.A. may limit teams to an eight game schedule, and start the playoffs a week earlier. That makes a lot of sense, but don't bet on it Just like in professional sports, T.V. plays an important part, and the I.H.S.A. has its hand out just like the N.C.C.A. From a personal standpoint I called the I.H.S.A. office in Bloomington on Monday to inquire about this situation, but was told that no one was available to answer my questions, but to call back later in the week. For many of you it is the same old answer, "Don't call me, I'll call you". North Suburban basketball teams won 18 and lost 9 over the holidays. The trend seems to be schedule your own holiday tourney. Lake Forest, Barrington and Mundelein won their own tourneys. Crystal Lake finished second at Woodstock, McHenry finished second at Sycamore, and Libertyville finished second at the Niles West tourney. Zion Benton and North Chicago each wound up 1 and 2 at Waukegan, and Crown did likewise. Good news from New Mexico Military. Marty Zeller a former Warrior is not only a Co-Capt. of the team but is the leading scorer and rebounder. Marty has 61 pts. in three games along with 47 rebounds. Ten schools have given Marty a look in the early season including Michigan die number one rated team in the nation. Keep up the good work Marty. Warrior fans are pulling for you and hope you make the big time next year. A little Warrior flavor was seen last Saturday night in Chicago. The Elmhurst basketball team played at I.I.T. in Chicago, and although they were soundly beaten, the Elmhurst five at one time had three former Warriors on the court at the same time. Roger and Tommy Ludwig, sons of Warrior coach Ken, along with another former Warrior, Terry Reilly, are among the Elmhurst squad. Maybe the Elmhurst coach should get Marty Zeller and Steve Koerber to go along with the above named three and really know what a winner can do. Illinois high school sport fans are saddened by the death of Russ Ahearn. The former coach of the Hebron "Green Giants" who made Illinois basketball history, by winning the 1952 title died over the weekend in a Chicago hospital. His 1952 Hebron team made history by winning the State title, the only district team to do so, with an enrollment of 97 students. They defeated Quincy in overtime 64 to 59. Russ has been retired from teaching, and coaching for the past several years. He was quite a guy, and as a young coach many years ago, I can remember him telling me the story of the Hebron victory at the State Finals in Champaign. Little did I know at the time, that the man who introduced me to Russ was none other than our football coach Bill Day. Bill was coaching at Woodland of Streator at the time, and was a personal friend of Russ Ahearn. He like many others in the field of high school coaching was a gentlemen, and like many we are sorry to see leave this earth. My good friends Dave and Laurie Mihevc have come up with the blockbuster in the North Suburban basketball race. As you know these two fine Warrior fans have used their Ouija board the past several seasons, and have been right on their pick of the winner of the basketball race. Again this season I asked them for their predictions, and as usual they have responded. The Ouija Board has made the following predictions: Barrington with a 16 and 0 record or maybe one loss, McHenry to finish second with a 14 and 2 record. (Good for the Ouija). North Chicago and Libertyville to tie for third, Zion fifth, Lake Forest sixth, Crystal Lake seventh, Mundelein eighth, and Crown to finish in the basement. I sure hope that Dave and Laurie had the right combination working, because a second place finish for the Warriors will be above expectations for most of the Warrior fans. Don't forget wrestling tonight at West Campus, and basketball at Barrington. This matchless drive tnrotigh the Blue Ridge Mountains provides an endless view of the Shenandoah Valley. With 75 overlooks you'll marvel at the variations of the beautiful panorama. For the outdoor enthusiast climbing, hiking and horseback riding are all available. Every possible accommodation and con venience you could ask for is also to be found. At many locations along the drive, such as Loft Mountain, gift shops, service stations and camper supplies are available. In addition camping is provided in four locations. Also in Front Royal, Vir ginia, only 69 miles from Washington, D.C., you'll find the famous Skyline Caverns. No trip to Virginia would be complete without touring this renowned attraction. Located just one mile from the en trance to the Skyline Drive, Skyline Caverns are easily reached via I 81 and I 66. The breathtaking sights you'll find underground at Skyline Cav erns will rival the awe inspir ing views along the Drive. Skyline Caverns offer the visitor the opportunity to see more types of formations than any other cavern in the world and one, the Antho- dites, are to be found no place else in the world. The delicate "cave flowers" of white calcite grow in all dir ections and actually defy the' law of gravity. Other points of interest in the tour of the Caverns include the "God in the Mountain" drama (a nar rative in light and sound), Capitol Dome, and an under ground trout stream. What do you think I should do? OUR REPLY: We think you should take it easy. It's difficult to determine whether your "boyfriend" said he likes you or doesn't like you -- as you said both in your letter. The point is. before you can handle the situation, you have to make cer tain you're clear on what the situation is.
