There were 111,461 em­ ployees of all state agencies in August, 1976, an increase of 4,246, or 4.0 percent, as com­ pared to July, 1976. Increases primarily are due to university personnel returning for the fall semester. Exclusive of educational institutions, the August, 1976, total was 77,707, a decrease of 317, or .4 percent from the July, 1976, figure. Changes by major groups were: Constitutional officers and courts down 66, or .7 per­ cent; code departments down 1,033, or 1.6 percent; major commissions up 496, or 13.8 p e r c e n t ; m i s c e l l a n e o u s agencies up 286, or 14.1 percent. Payrolls for all agencies totaled $110,411,644, an increase of $4,012,918, or 3.8 percent from July, 1976. Payrolls for all agencies except educational institutions were $79,008,830, an increase of $162,966, or .2 percent. The number of employees in August, 1976, was 562 less than in August, 1975. Educational | SERVICE NEWS { Two Local Marines In NATO Exercise Marine Corporals Royce D. Taylor and Glen E. Stach, both formerly of McHenry, recently returned from participation in the maritime portion of the institutions increased by 389, while all other state agencies decreased by 951. Total payroll costs for all state agencies increased $2,127,333, or 2.0 percent from August, 1975, to August, 1976. major NATO exercise "Autumn Forge '76". Taylor is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard H. Kopp of 1411 May street, McHenry. A 1974 graduate of McHenry Com­ munity high school, he joined the Marine corps in August, 1974. He is serving as a member of Regimental Landing team-8, homebased at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Stach is the son of Edward T. Stach of 4208 W. South street and Mrs. Janice Blank of 1605 N. Riverside drive, both of McHenry. He joined the Marine corps in April, 1974, following graduation from McHenry high school. He is serving as a member of the 14th Marine Amphibious brigade, Norfolk, Va "Autumn Forge" is the title of the annual training exercises conducted jointly by the nine members of the NATO Alliance. Their .unit took part in two major events during the deployment: "Operation Team Work '76" and "Operation Bonded Item". "Team Work '76" involved fleet operations in the North Atlantic ocean, the English channel and the Baltic sea and included a major amphibious landing in Norway. "Bonded Item" was a coordinated land, sea and air operation which included a major amphibious landing in Denmark. Admiral Issac C. Kidd, Jr., USN, the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic'* coor­ dinated the overall conduct of the exercises and Vice Admiral John J. The primary objective of the exercises was to test and im- proveJhe combat preparedness of the allied forces for the defense of Western Europe. They were also designed to evaluate NATO's rapid rein­ forcement capabilities; to test command and control procedures for coordination of NATO's sea, land and air forces; and to provide unified, coordinated training for the national forces within the Allied European command.
