Assured him we still have them and will wear them on special occasion. Twas nice to say hello to Clara Miller this week. She still corresponds with Ida Quinlan, former McHenryrite now in Arkansas, and passes along some of the contents of this column Hi Ida! ^ At the Rotary Christmas dinner-party this week. Dr. Fike handed us a column written by Ed Levitt of the Oakland Tribune way back last spring. The column started out, "The guy was on the phone, but he sounded as though he were on something stronger". The fellow had a computer that told him Oakland would play Cincinnati in the World Series with the Reds winning in six games. That computer wasn't completely broken down. It gave other information that is now either history or miscalculation. When this hits the newstands, we will be gathered round for the annual Plain- dealer Christmas party. The pace is fast. Right from the deadline to the waistline. Grandmas used to say, "Good cream makes good coffee". The time of year has arrived when most of us say, "We'll get that done right after the holidays". Clearing Off The Sports Desk The Harlem "Globetrotters bring their world of basketball wizardry and family fun to Chicago for one game only on December 30th at Chicago Stadium. •NO EVIDENCE WOLVES WILL DEPLETE DEER' There is no evidence that wolves will deplete the deer herd in northern Minnesota. So says the Eastern Timber Wolf Recovery Team. This statement was issued in response to recent well publicized reports that a computer had predicted demise of the northern Minnesota deer herd to wolves. CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR SALMON FISHERMAN • The holiday season is also chinook salmon hatching season at the Illinois Depart ment of Conservation's Spring Grove Hatchery. About 225,000 chinook salmon eggs are expected to hatch at Spring Grove to help make next year's salmon stocking program the largest in Illinois' history. The salmon program began in 1967. Early January will bring hangovers, television reruns and, on the brighter side, the 1977 Chicago Boat, Sports & RV Show. January 5 through 9 are the new. earlier dates for the 44th annual sportsman's show, which is held in Chicago's McCormick Place. This year's show will fill, for the first time, two entire floors of the giant exposition hall: -The Upper Floor will be jammed with 500 boats of every description, a marine "Ac cessory Store", 150 travel and resort booths, the "Panorama of the Great Outdoors", and the Huck Finn Fishing Pond where kids 42 and under can catch live trout for free. Basketball Season Starts For Sedom The special education district of McHenry County basketball team started play Sunday, December 5. The school is located in Woodstock and is for all the trainable mentally handicapped children in McHenry County. The rules are changed to make the game easier for the students but it doesn't take away from the excitement of the game or the fun for the players. A strong defense held Marquardt in check throughout the game while the scoring of Paul Smith with 13 points and Ray Lustig's 10 points paced the Thumper attack. Friday night the North Chicago Warhawks invade West Campus for an important North Suburban league clash. The Warhawks like the Warriors are 2 and 1 in the standings and trail Libertyville by one game. Eleven seniors including five lettermen are returning to second year coach Tom Gregorian of the Warhawks. The Warhawks finished one game behind champion Zion Benton last year, and defeated the ZeeBees in the Regional finals. The Warhawks are led this year by Nate Lundy, Mike Seals and LaMont Wallace a 6'2" junior. Both Seals and Lundy are seniors. Coach Gregorian states, "With five senior lettermen, including three regulars, we should have a pretty good season". Their only conference loss was to Libertyville by the score of 61 to 58. All five star ters are over six feet tall, and thre will make the task more difficult for the Warriors. The Warriors after a win over high scoring Mundelein on Friday, didn't respond on Saturday against Zion and went down to a 68 to 58 defeat. No doubt that the Warriors will want to make amends for that poor showing. On Saturday night an old foe the Grant Bulldogs will be in town. With four lettermen returning Coach Tom Maple has a tall squad, but they have been struggling in the early season. Nevertheless, you can bet that it will be a whale of a game, as the Bulldogs always seem to arise to the occasion when playing the Warriors. However, the same can be said of the Warriors, the rivalry goes back a long time, and the Warriors would like nothing better than to win a pair this weekend. Frosh Cagers Split Games Gary Gray's freshmen cagers split a pair of games over the weekend, defeating Mundelein 47 to 36, and losing to Zion Benton 67 to 62. The Zion game was a real thriller and the outcome was in doubt until the final minute. The "Rassling Warriors" of Coach Marty Sobczak: went.. down to defeat last Friday night against the ZeeBees of Zion by the score of 28 to 22. It was a close match all the way, and the Warriors are showing improvement as the season progresses along the way. Tonight and tomorrow the Warriors will be at Harvard for the annual Harvard In vitational. This meet is one of the best in northern Illinois, with sixteen teams taking part from throughout the northern suburbs.
