The 7th graders fell behind by 5 pts. late in the 4th quarter, however, fine defense work by Mike Sabakta and free throws by Scott Truckenbrod allowed the Mustangs to catch St John's with 30 seconds remaining and Montini tied the score. In the last 30 seconds Montini scored 4 pts. to win the game. Leading scorers for Montini were Mike Sabakta with 10 pts. and John Huff with 8 pts. EAGLE RIVER READIES WORIJ) CHAMPIONSHIP SNOW RAC E Eagle River, Wi. - It's full speed ahead as final plans are materializing for the 14th annual World Championship Snowmobile Derby at Eagle River, Wi., Jan. 14-15-16. One change in scheduling originally announced for the coming event, is that drivers will begin qualifying for the world's title feature race beginning Thursday, Jan. 13. In an effort to draw a bigger turnout of drivers on Jan. 13, the sponsoring Eagle River Lions Club will automatically qualify the first 30 drivers with the best times for the 48-driver semi-finals on Jan. 15. Ten drivers then will qualify for the championship feature, set for 3 p.m., Jan. 16. As public housing is always scarce during Derby Days, advance room reservations are urged. On The Sidelines by Dick R a MM ft The Warriors really put on a fine exhibition of basketball last Friday night as they whipped the Warhawks from North Chicago 87 to 71. In the pre-season picks, Coach El Partenheimer told me that the Warhawks were the class of the conference. However, last Friday night in the locker room he said he could have been wrong, and for good friend El to admit that, is the statement of the year. The Warriors did rebound from a poor first half to defeat the Grant Bulldogs on Saturday night. Next Monday they meet Hirsch from the Chicago Public League at 12:30 p.m. in the Elgin tourney. Little is known at this time of the Hirsch team, their coaches did advise Ken Ludwig not to send a scout to the Hirsch gym on the south side of Chicago. I'm sure that some type of arrangement has been made between the two schools. Our good friend George Cadotte miseed his first Warrior game in over three years Saturday night. Seems like Mother Cadotte and daughter Maggie had other plans for the great Warrior fan, and like the good fellow he is, obeyed the home folks, at least this time. An interested fan at the game Friday night was a real Warrior fan, Father Joe Kulak from DeKalb. Even though Father Joe is in DeKalb, his heart is still in McHenry. You can bet as the season progresses, Father Joe will be at more games. Teams for the McHenry regional in March have been announced by the I.H.S.A. Along with the host Warriors, will be Grant, Woodstock and Belvidere. The winner will advance to the Rockford Sectional at Rock Valley College. Bill Blankenhorn, the Athletic Director at McHenry, has been named acting President of the new conference that will commence in September of 1978. Bob Swartzloff of McHenry will act as President of the Principals of the same association. Beginning in January , monthly meetings will be held with the head coaches in each sport, along with their girl associates. The head coaches will formulate the rules and regulations regarding each sport. The Athletic Directors will be putting together the rules and regulations regarding the conference. Among the problems. facing the A.D.'s will be the assignment chairman for all officials, the conference statistican, and the important item of naming the conference. From all reports a contest will be held among students of the participating schools, to give the conference a name. Sounds like fun, for the students, but maybe some headaches for the Athletic Directors. - In May the A.D.'s will make a final draft for the conference, and for each sport to be submitted to the Principals for their June meeting. Hopefully by May or June all conference schedules will be made by the A.D. 's. Then the process of hiring officials, scheduling non conference games will commence. This is 15 months prior to the start of the conference season. This is non too early, as most teams have their schedules at least two years in advance. Bill hopes to put the following into effect regarding the football schedules, and I agree with him on this matter. A rotated schedule each year, except for the last game when natural rivalries will take place. Some suggestions would be Woodstock against the Warriors, Crystal Lake to play Cary Grove, Dundee and Crown, the new Crystal Lake school and Jacobs, which is just two miles down the road. I believe that this is the natural thing to do, and should make for some good games on the final day of the season. As the holidays approach us, on behalf of the Warrior Athletic Department, I would like to wish each and everyone of you a MERRY CHRISTMAS. :$ I BECK BAGS A 138 POUND BUC.-Deer season is open and Mike Gilley of the Belvidere Bucs becomes the prey as Bob Beck of the Warriors has him locked up in this match at West Campus Tuesday night. Beck won the decision by a 7-2 score. The Warriors lost the meet to the Belvidere Bucs 32 to 23. Smoking Tips Careless use of smoking ma terials is among the major causes of fires. Follow these suggestions to reduce smoking- related fires: --Never smoke in bed. --Keep plenty of large, deep ashtrays on hand. --Empty ashtrays regularly into covered metal containers, especially before retiring for the evening. --Break matches in half after use, and then properly dispose of them. --Never discard smoldering butts into wastebaskets. --Use your ashtray when driv ing. --Keep smoking materials and matches out of the' reach of children. For extra protection, early- warning smoke and heat detec tion systems are available to alert a family to the presence of a fire in the home. Because about 60 per cent of all fatal household fires occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., these alert systems are particularly important during he usualleeping hours. Early-warning systems do not eliminate the need for a well- rehearsed family escape plan. Be sure to have an alternate escape route from each room, especially the bedrooms.
