Mayor Stanek announced at Monday night's Council meeting that the city census had been completed and 831 "new bodies" had been counted. The official population is now 8.511. It was decided not to release this information until the contract was signed, which was early in February The City Council heard the good news Tuesday night that the city's financial picture "has brightened considerably" and it appears there could be a $39,000 balance at the end of the fiscal year April 30. City officials appeared surprised and flustered when a large number of peoffle showed up at city hall Tuesday night to attend "an informal public meeting" to discuss the Old McHenry Bridge project. County citizens protesting the scheduled destruction of the 96- year-old Pearl street bridge in McHenry have swelled to over 900, according to petitions gathered by the newly formed McHenry Historic Bridge committee, which hopes to save the landmark. Robert Kee of Wonder Lake was presented a silver Central Telephone company of Illinois Humanitarian award during luncheon ceremonies held recently. The silver medal recognizes Kee's life-saving actions last Nov. 19 when he pulled an elderly woman from the path of an approaching express train. MAY The Illinois State Lottery continues to smile on the McHenry community. The Plaindealer learned this week there are four persons from the immediate area who qualify for the May 12 Million Dollar drawing. This is the last of the old fifty-cent games. The lucky qualifiers are Camilla Gaylord, Lester Bonner, Harry Gark and Mary Hess. Pam Krasucki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Krasucki and Terry Reilly, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Reilly, were crowned king and queen of the MCHS prom Saturday night. They received their crowns mid-way through a formal dance held at Illinois Beach State lodge, Zion. A total of 100 walkers com­ pleted a 10-mile course during the CROP Hunger Walk held last Saturday in McHenry. A total of $286 per mile was pledged by the walkers' sponsors. The problem of new planning in High School District 156 as the result of the withdrawal of large numbers of students in the next three years is being faced by educators responsible for meeting the challenge. Johnsburg District 12 will soon be operating a high school for students living in that area and an estimated 600 to 700 students" will enroll. Deborah Carro. a petite, 5 foot 2 inch tall, 1976 graduate of MCHS, was chosen 1976 Miss McHenry Bicentennial queen Tuesday night at the American Legion home before a standing- room-only crowd. The blonde, brown-eyed queen is the 18- year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs. David S. Page of 909 N. Allen avenue. Final approval was given by the City Council Monday night for construction of Unit 1 at Brittany Park, a new sub­ division located west of Lakeland Park. Petersen Park will be the scene of a variety of activities Sunday, July 4, when the community dedicates the park and observes the start of a new century. The Bicentennial garden dedications is a feature planned and there will be the presentation of plaques for the oldest homes in McHenry. JULY At the June meeting, the board of trustees for McHenry County college recommended that the 1976-77 tentative budget of $2,529,950.00 be placed up for public inspection. McHenry joined the nation Sunday in paying tribute to the country's 200th birthday. For the city, the interest was twofold, for its also marked dedication of the new Petersen park. Topping a field of twenty-six candidates in competition for Little Miss Peanut was Tracey Kotiw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roman Kotiw, 4618 Garden Quarter. The City Council took three decisive steps toward the replacement of the old Pearl street steel bridge. It approved an agreement covering con­ struction and maintenance of the bridge, a resolution ac­ cepting the agreement and authorizing execution of delivery and accepted plans and specifications. - Nineteen volunteers have been sworn in as auxiliary deputy sheriffs of McHenry county by Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell. This took place after the graduation of an advanced police training course of 150 hours which began in January. The Thomas P. O'Leary home at 4305 S. The city of McHenry received a total of $89,729.97 in state revenue sharing funds for fiscal year 1976, according to statistics released this week by the Department of Local Government Affairs. SEPTEMBER A boost to the economy of the McHenry area ranging from $1,170,000 to more than $2 million was anticipated with announcement that the local Admiral plant at 3908 W. Elm street would colse its doors Nov. 1. Admiral Group of Rock­ well International corporation announced plans to transfer operations of its McHenry plant to the Harvard TV assembly operations. Plans for the twentieth an- niversay of McHenry hospital Sept. 26-Oct. 2, were an­ nounced. At the suggestion of President James Althoff, the board of High School District 156 made official the action taken at a special meeting held recently. At that time the board acted to purchase the John­ sburg school District 12 equity in District 156 and resolved other issues, including the tuition to be charged. Sharing the historic significance of this Bicen­ tennial year, Zion Lutheran church at 4206 W. Rt. 120, McHenry, is celebrating a century of service to the local community. The McHenry County board accepted the low bid of William Zeigler and Son, at $879,767.42 for the construction of the Pearl street bridge over the Fox river1 in McHenry at the regular meeting Sept. 21. OCTOBER Richard Otto Macek, 29, formerly of 2017 Woodlawn Park drive, McHenry, was indicated by the McHenry County Grand jury Wednesday on charges of murdering a former McHenry woman and her daughter. The indictments charge Macek with the murder of Nancy Lossman, 27, and her three-year-old daughter, Lisa, in their Crystal Lake apart­ ment Monday, Sept. 9, 1974. A referendum to create a McHenry 'Gounty Area Vocational center was soundly defeated Saturday at the polls by a 3'2 to 1 ratio. It did not pass in any of the nine county school districts. ? "The city is solvent in the General fund and other funds. It really is." That was the good news heard Monday night from Auditor William Froehlich during his review of the audit for the fiscal year ending April 30, 1976. "We hope to get 60,000 to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 2", County Clerk Vernon Kays announced with optimism when the question was directed to him. If the experienced officer holder is correct, this will mean that 78 percent of the voters in McHenry county will express themselves for federal, state and county candidates in spite of expressions of voter apathy. NOVEMI££R W After months of construction, the McHenry Public library at the corner of Green and Main streets reopened with a new addition early last month. On Sunday, Nov. 7, the public attended open house. By an unanimous vote following an executive session Tuesday evening, the board of High School District 156 voted favorably on a 6.9 percent in­ crease in the teacher salary k^hedule for the 1976-77 year. This ended a deadlock that has existed for several months. The old Pearl street bridge has been purchased by Terra Cotta Realty co. of Crystal Lake, \o preserve it for its historical value. One span will be used as a pedestrian bridge over Squaw Creek as the ap­ proach to the proposed new office building from the new parking lot for TC Industries, Inc. Herrmann of McHenry was installed as the new Circuit judge for McHenry county Monday morning in an impressive ceremony, before a standing-room-only crowd. Judge Herrmann replaces Judge William J. G lea son who is stepping down to return to his law practice. With the McHenry Savings & Loan pressuring for an answer, the City Council Monday night agreed to purchase land surrounding the S & L building, and to turn it into a municipal parking lot. The city of McHenry is 146 acres larger today, following unanimous approval by the City Council to annex Miller- owned land on Rt. 120, west of McHenry. The new city property is land on the south side of Rt. 120, stretching from Draper road to Valley View school. It extends southward to a subdivision of homes, forming somewhat of a square, approximately 146 acres large. Howard "Howie" Joseph Hansen, 25, of 709 W. Oriole trail, Pistakee Highlands. McHenry. died Friday, Dec. 24, when the car in which he was riding plunged through the ice of Lake Geneva, Wi., and disappeared beneath the surface.
