I Reveal) Exciting Sports Stories In '76 Review JANUARY With a commanding 10 to 0 lead after the first two minutes of play, the McHenry Warriors went on to break a seventeen- year-old scoring record when they defeated Hinsdale South 104 to 48 in the opening round of the Kankakee Holiday Tour­ nament. In the finals, playing before a packed house and a partisian Kankaee crowd, the McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig walked away with the big trophy at the Kankaee Holiday Tournament New Year's eve. They went on to defeat Eastridge by a score of 56 to 49, after a jittery start which found them trailing 16 to 11 at the end of the first period. Senior Steve Koerber, the Warrior high scoring forward, was selected by the officials as the tournament's outstanding player. Coach Marty Sobczak's McHenry "Rassling Warriors" got back on the winning track Tuesday night at West Campus as they defeated Cary Grove, 29 to 16. Putting on a display of near perfect basketball, the McHenry Warriors blasted the Mundelein Mustangs, 88 to 56, Friday night. Then, before another large gathering Saturday evening, they defeated the Marian Central Hurricanes, 75 to 59. The "Rassling Warriors" of Coach .Sobczak defeated Woodstock by the score of 36 to 13 after losing to Mundelein because of injuries in their matches to two competitors. Both Denny Useman and Brian Nuss had to default because of injuries. The McHenry Warriors after a sluggish first half rolled to their fifteenth win in a row when they defeated Lake Forest 62 to 42. The win still keeps the Warriors atop the North Suburban with a 6 and 0 record. The Warriors defeated Crown 94 to 58 prior to the game against Lake Forest. They will put their fifteen game winning streak on the line Jan. 23 when they go against North Chicago. The McHenry High Warriors winning streak was snapped at 15, Jan. 23, as they lost to the North Chicago Warhawks 74 to 64 at North Chicago. The Montini girls basketball team participated in the First Avon Invitational tournament and won a trophy. Before a huge crowd, Libertyville pushed the Warriors down to fourth place in the North Suburban with a 52 to 36 victory. The McHenry Junior high school girls' basketball team closed out their season on > J- • f Saturday in third place in tournament play-offs. The Warriors chalked up wins number 18 and 19 over the weekend as they defeated the Barrington Broncos here Friday night 87 to 77 and then beat Dundee Saturday night 63 to 51. Matt Schuster at 112 lbs. and Brian Nuss at 155 both qualified for the Barrington Sectional wrestling tourney to be held Friday and Saturday at Barrington. -- Coach Mike Shanahan "Water Warriors" warmed up for the Arlington District by defeating the Woodstock Blue Streaks by the score of 49 to 33. For the second year in <a row, the McHenry High Warriors have won 20 games during the regular season. This was ac­ complished when they defeated the Tigers from Crystal Lake, 57 to 47. The "Water Warriors" closed out their season with a 106 to 60 win over Stevenson high school. They have won nine out of the eleven events. The Warriors advanced to the finals of their own regional tournament with a victory over Hononegah, 94 to 60. MARCH The Warriors, using the lull court and a tenacious defense, won the season fin^l over Crown, 79-61. * The Warriors romped and stomped their way to a regional tournament win over Belvidere, 102 to 52. The Warriors are ready to go on to battle against Rockford Guilford after defeating Rock­ ford Auburn, 72 to 63. The McHenry Girls varsity basketball team defeated Grayslake 51-42 tor their first win of the year. Matt Schuster, a 112 lb. senior wrestler, was honored by his teammates recently before an overflow crowd at West Campus as the Most Valuable wrestler on the 1975-76 squad. The "Fighting Warriors" of Coach Ken Ludwig were eliminated from the state playoffs with a loss to West Aurora in the DeKalb Super- sectional by the score of 53 to 40. ' Basketball and volleyball awards were given to eight girls at the Girls Winter Sports banquet, April 5. A Montini girls' volleyball team composed of sixth and seventh graders won the Fox Valley conference double elimination volleyball tour­ nament held in early April. Coach Gary Gray's McHenry high tennis squad won their eighth dual meet of the season and sixteenth match overall in defeating Mundelein by the score of 4 to 1. The McHenry high track, team came home with the third place trophy in the Fox Valley relays held in a downpour Saturday in Rata via. The McHenry area Men's 12- inch Slow-Pitch league is ready for its eighth season. MAY •• The McHenry high Warnors won their own McHenry relays for the first time in history when they scored 99 points to defeat Kaneland. Monday, May 10, starts the Men's 16" Softball League at the V.F.W Softball diamond. Games are played Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 7 :30. Coach Wally Scott's track Warriors defended their Woodstock relays crown Saturday when they scored 109 points to runnerup Woodstock's 80. The Pigtail League held the first athletic event at Petersen Park last Thursday in spite of bone-chilling weather. Robert Reuter and Kevin C^Jergren have been awarded the rank of Black Belt by the Lakeland Academy of Karate. Wendy Ulick of McHenry sprinting for Marian Central broke the district record for the 100-yard dash in 11.7 time at the Sycamore District Meet. Eight members of the McHenry track team will compete in seven events of the State track meet in Charleston, May 28 and 29. One hundred and forty-two students particpated in the Hilltop Junior Olympics held on May 22. JUNE Awards were presented to nearly 200 students at the second annual Sports banquet held at the McHenry Junior high school. Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry Warriors placed two seniors on the North Suburban all conference baseball team. They were Tom Ludwig and Bill Meyers. Hau$inger Concrete of the men's ,16" softball found themselves on top of the team standings with 5 wins and no losses. JULY The McHenry Junior Youth league, at its June board meeting, established a Hall of Fame to recognize the services of individuals in boys baseball in McHenry. Named were Fred Meyer, Henry Tonyan, Ed Buss, and Chuck Miller. Both of the McHenry Softball All-Star games played at the> VFW field were by the McHenry 12" team. The McHenry Girls Pigtail and Ponytail league teams ended a successful 1976 season Sunday with a full day of ac­ tivities at Petersen park. July 17 and 18 is Northern Illini Bowmen's 19th annual 3-D SAFARI. It will be held on the wooded archery range just a mile west of McHenry on Draper road. The McHenry Area Jaycees are sponsoring a gimmick road rally, Sunday, July 25. The McHenry Junior Youth league held their annual All- Star games on Sunday, July 18 at the V.F.W. fields. In total there were six All-Star games. McHenry county Farm Bureau golfers earned a major shore of the berths earned by contestants in the District golf meet at Plum Tree this week. AUGUST With ideal weather conditions and the course covered with lady golfers from sunrise to sunset, it was truly Ladies Day at McHenry Country Club. Jack Thomas of McHenry was a marathon winner in both events of the Top Flight Championship play last Saturday and Sunday. It is all over! Rusty Nail is the 1976 twelve inch softball team which takes home the trophy for first place. Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry high golf team really turned on the power Tuesday afternoon at Grayslake as they won 148 to 169. The McHenry High Cross Country squad defeated Dundee and Grant in a double duel meet held at Dundee Sept. 16. The McHenry High girls field hockey team shut out the Crystal Lake girls Sept. 22, 2 to 0. The McHenry High golfers of Coach Chuck Cuda showed their heels to nineteen other teams as they won the Crown Invitational with a score of 312. Paul LaBlanc, Crystal Lake, was named the Most Valuable Fall football player at seventeenth annual athletic banquet. The Marian Central Sophomore football team raised its record to 5-0 on Saturday, Oct. 9, against a rugged Montini team. For years too long to remember, the McHenry High Warriors failed again to win their annual homecoming game as they bowed to Lake Forest 43 to 26. This past week the girls tennis team brought their record to 5-6 with two out of three victories. The Montini Mustangs won their fifth straight game by beating Hebron 26-0. The "Running Warriors" won another pair of North Suburban meets this past week when they defeated North Chicago 15 to 48 and Crown 16 to 48. Mike Burmann, a McHenry high junior, was crowned the McHenry county cross country champion at Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake.
