Recording 8-track cartridge -- not hard if you *re careful Y Since the recent intro duction of new 8-track record-playback units in both stereo and quadra phonic, cartridge users are expanding their collec tions for home, portable' and automobile systems. Musical quality is up and options are expand ing. For the cartridge user, it's only a matter of your own creativity. Still, it's necessary to remember that the best recordings come from careful attention to detail, which should always in clude preparing your ma chine. Here are some tips from the recording engineers at Capitol Magnetic Prod ucts: Machine Maintenance: Always clean your heads before each recording ses sion. Debris causes loss of high frequency response. Cotton Q-Tips and iso- propyl alcohol work fine or you can buy a commer cially manufactured head- cleaner (a cartridge which is inserted into the ma chine and allowed to run for 15 seconds). Q-Tips are cheapest but, t with 8-track, their use is a somewhat delicate oper ation. You must buy the extra long sticks, since the cartridge insertion hole is ^ about five inches deep. If you use a commer cially-made cleaner, follow instructions carefully. Most cleaners work on the ^htheory of abrasion. Over- ^pRise damage your equij ' mm d: set J f your ma Preset Machine; If your machine can be set up in the record mode without inserting a cart ridge, you will be hble to preset your machinf for optimum recording. Play your selection through, adjusting your record levels for the loud est passage. At this time, you should also decide whether or not you will be recording two or four channels and se lect the track desired. Normally, you will start at track 1 and proceed recording to fill the entire tape. It is good to pre select the material you wish to record so that you can purchase a tape that exactly fits the length of your selection. You will also want to preselect your tape on the basis of the recording you wish to make. If you are recording conversation or other material mostly coii- sisting of voices, you can use an inexpensive tape. If you are recording music, you will want a premium quality tape for mulated especially for the recording demands of mu^ sic. An excellent one is The Music Tape by Capitol. Locate Switching Foil: Before you start record ing, be sure the metallic splicing tape (also called switching foil) is exposed at the open end of the cartridge. « This tape indicates the beginning of the recording tape. If it doesn't show, you can still record, but your selection will be some where in the middle of the track you are using. To bring a foil back to the end, put the cartridge into your machine and preselect the fourth track (track 2 if you are record ing 4-channel). Then, run the cartridge through on "record" until you hear the click, indicat ing the tape has reached the switching foil. Your recorder will automatical ly eject the cartridge. Kerecording: Treat a used tape as if it were a new blank cart ridge. Your machine will erase as it goes, so all you have to do is be sure to start at the switching foil. If you accidentally allow the cartridge to move for ward when your machine is not in recording nuxie, you will have a few|^c- onds (or however long the situation lasts) of your original recording. Isabel Your Tape: Always label your cart ridges immediately after recording. For easy identi fication, write the name of the selection and the recording artist on both the label on the side of the box and the label on the end of the cartridge, BECAUSE Of I IS C.ONYF.NIK.NUE, and the fact that a cartridge gives yon longest play without having to be flipped over, 8-track 'has lone hern the most popular configuration for car playback units. I'lioto courtesy: C.apitol Magnetic Products. %Y„ && V BEFORE YOU START your recording, he sure the metallic splicing tape (often referred to as the switching foil) shows in the window at the open end of the cartridge. If it is not there, advises C.apitol Magnetic Products, you will not be recording at the beginning of the track. which will show while the tape is playing. " E x u b e r a n c e i s beauty."
