V rras mileage, or -iilU' vuur einld w it1* his math homework'/ Ten years ago, these tasks would have culled for several pads of scratch paper and a lot of sharp ened pencils. But today, with the help of a tiny electronic calcu lator about the size of one of those scratch pads, you can take care of all these mathematical chores a lot faster . . . and be a lot- more sure you're accurate. lixiii;: The electronic calculator is designed to make life easier for everyone who uses mathematics in his or her daily living. For the homemaker, the calculator is a faster, more accurate way of doubling a recipe, figuring out the household budget or dou ble-checking the super market check-out clerk. For the business person, it's an easier way of figur ing out expense accounts, or totalling payrolls. For the student, it makes math homework a breeze, helps simplify science projects and even makes it easier to work out base ball batting averages. And for children of all ages, the electronic calcu lator can be used to play a variety of numerical games that can be both fun and educational. There are two basic types of calculators: hand held and desk-top. The desk-top calculator is usually larger and more expensive- it is generally preferred for office usage. For home use, tire hand held calculator is , ideal. Many models are not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes. A few hand-held calcu lators come with printing features and print the K >. giMH calculation out on a strip of paper" to be kept as a permanent record. Most hand-held calcu lators offer the four basic mathematical functions: addition, subtraction, mul-. triplication and division. For a few dollars more, you can also get a "mem ory," which enables the calculator to store a past calculation, then bring it out again when needed, or an "automatic con stant," which allows you to multiply a series of numbers by the same num ber without having to re enter it each time. Many models also come with a percent key, to figure out percentages au tomatically, or a square- root key, to find the square root of a number. p o p u l a r i t y Some more complex -- and more expensive -- hand-held calculators are called "scientific" or "slide-" rule" models. They offerJa number of higher matrf-1 ematical functions such as trigonometry or loga rithms. Calculator technology is also turning up in a num ber of different forms un like the traditional hand held model. Several companies offer "checkbook" models, a small calculator with memory feature combined in a wallet-type check book. The calculator i£ used to enter deposits and record checks; its memory retains the balance in the account. When you^set out to shop for a calculator, be sure to determine ahead of time exactly what you'll be using it for. That way you won't wind up spend ing additional money on a lot of extra features you may never use. Then check to make sure the keyboard on the model you select is large enough to be handled eas ily, so you won't touch two keys at once: Check the power Make sure the display 'where the numbers ap pear) is large enough to be read easily. Also, check the calcula tor's power supply^ Most „ low-priced calculators are powered by throwaway batteries. But for a few dollars more you can get a rechargeable battery ^ with a much longer life, or an optional AC adapter so the calculator can be plugged into a wall socket. And be sure to. shop around before you decide to buy. Today you can find a bajfcic four-function calcu lator for under $15, or a more fully featured model for only n little nfore money. \V Check to make silre the store you select offers the lowest price for the model you want. Where can you buy a calculator? Almost any where these days: your neighborhood appliance- TV store, local department store, national discount chains, even the super market down the street.
