Other conservation stamp subjects featured this year include the moose, mink, ospey, brown pelican, West Indian flamingo, white-eyed vireo, black-crowned night heron, king eider, dolphin, green sunfish, and manta ray. The federation, which has issued its now-familiar stamps since 1938, has also produced a conservation stamp album in which to display them The album tells the story behind each stamp subject. An essay inside the front cover reminds the reader of the different water needs of various animals. The essay inside the back cover notes some of the ways man has changed wildlife's water supply and suggests ways of "Protecting Water for Wildlife, Preserving Clean Water for Man." Conservation stamps were initiated after an anonymous letter writer in 1937 made the suggestion to the then newly- founded NWF. Funds raised through sale of the stamps have helped wildlife and the nation's natural resources since 1938, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt bought the first sheet of stamps and thus focused national attention on the problem The conservation stamp program, which grows yearly in popularity, attracts the services of such leading wildlife artists as Donald R Eckelberry, Roger Tory Peterson, Maynard Reece, Charles L. (Chuck) Ripper, and Anthony J. Rudisill. These artists' works are among those reproduced on the 1977 stamps. Watercolors are the preferred medium for stamp paintings; every detail is carefully checked for scientific ac curacy. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS Renowned Singer To Perform For Local Children Miss Ella Jenkins, renowned children's songwriter and recording star, will appear at the Cooper Kiddie college Saturday, Feb. 19. for two performances. Miss Jenkins will perform at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in her fourth annual performance. Miss Jenkins' own start in music began during her years as a student at San Francisco State college. At coffee houses, clubs, and children's camps, she started tapping tables, graduated to tin cans, water pails, a tom-tom, and eventually to ,the ukelele, which is her major instrument today. Returning to Chicago, she developed her singing techniques, got involved in a children's television program,, and eventually became a recording star with a popular record company. She feels the value of music in the teaching curriculum cannot be underestimated. She believes that in music, children can really use their imagination and expiess many different moods. Tickets for either per- formanceVnay be purchased from the school.
