In keeping with the department theme, Hometown U.S.A.-A Past to Remember and a Future To Hold, the motto of the projected program will be "Civil Preparedness is my responsibility". Peacetime disasters still kill hundreds of Americans every year, injures thousands, inflict widespread suffering and hardship and cause great economic loss. We are recommending that at least one member in the family take the Red Cross first aid course to be able to be prepared for emergencies of all types. One well trained person might mean the difference between life and death, in case of a natural disaster. The better we prepare ourselves and our families for emergencies, the less likelihood there will be of disasters and fatalities. We must learn and practice emergency actions and have each member of the family join hands to form a strong 'defense team' With such cooperation, every family in our 'Hometown U S A ' will be ready to care for its o.vn needs until assistance can arrive and we will be 'survivors' instead of statistic?' on a fatality list. Mrs. Messer also states that booklets and pamphlets are available through the local Civil Preparedness office. Benefit Breakfast Ticket Proceeds For Choir Robes On Sunday morning, Jan. 30 a benefit breakfast and bake sale will be served at the First United Methodist church, 3717 West Main street, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The menu will be juice, and beverages, and pancakes and sausages, or scrambled eggs, sausages and toast. A very fine breakfast is promised, and the service will be good. All proceeds from this benefit breakfast will go to the fund for the purchase of new choir robes. Harold Wildhagen is the chairman, and tickets can be secured from him, or choir members. Tickets will be available at the door. Keep Him In "Delilah, are you sure cutting Sampson's hair will decrease his strength?" "No. but he'll look so funny he won't step outside the house for weeks." CONSUMER GUIDELINES Mobile homes must now be built in compliance with new safety and construction standards. The standards were developed in an at tempt to reduce personal in jury and property damage resulting from mobile home accidents. Consumers in terested in the new safety features should look for the tag that must appear on mobile homes that comply with federal standards. Your happiness is gone, all You have left is frightening tears You've searched for the answer in the mirror. You look at yourself to see a hurt within your, heart. You cry out is this really me? Where is the young facfe my husband adored? It's gone not even the soft skin is there any more. There are wrinkles iri the corners of the eyes Antl the twinkle is gone she says with a sigh. She reached out with the cold cream and the reflection she smeared And it dawned on her It was old age she feared "My husband still loves me, she Shouted aloud # "It's just in a different way", she said, feeling proud. Sandy Wollen I SENIOR CITIZEN'S CORNER Veterans Get Increase A seven per cent increase in monthly cash benefits for vet erans receiving pensions and higher annual income limits on which pensions are based be came effective early this year. Approximately one million veterans and 1.6 million sur vivors who get pensions are receiving higher monthly pay ments. These are mainly vet erans covered under legisla tion enacted in 1960 Veterans still receiving pensions under the so-called "old law" are not getting the increase Second Opinion One neighbor goes to the doctor and gets the following diagnosis "You have the dirtiest¥ most unkept, uncivilized body I have ever seen." The patient replied that he had befri told the same thing by another doctor earlier in the week. "Then why did you come to see me?" "I wanted a second opinion." answered the patient^ | THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER Income limitations have been increased for all VA pensioners regardless of whether they are covered by the old or new legislation, as follows: to $3,540 for veterans or surviving spouses without dependents and to $4,760 for those with dependents under the current program; and to $3,100 and $4,460 for those under the prior pension law. Political Rhetoric In the last campaign, both par ties were heard to say about the other's candidate: They have a "me to" candidate, running on a "yes, but" platform, being ad v i s e d b y a " h a s b e e n " s t a f f .
