Hurckes and Partenheimer combined for 30 points and Miller hit for another 30, bat the Warriors ended on the short end as Barrington won 83-74. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) rtJMDHs KOI EARL WALSH With all the scare about the energy crisis, there might be a lot to be said for wood burning stoves and long underwear. George Larkin thinks this winter is too old fashioned. Stores have little boxes on the counters with coin slots in the top and an appeal to help feed the ducks. The way our bags of bird food disappear, it may be necessary to send out an appeal to help feed the sparrows. For three days a - runnin' three out of four letters in our mail box asked for money. No. Not bills! These were for charity. May have to quit reading those medical columns in the papers. They scare you. There is one M.D. who debunks every medicine with scares about side effects^ Some would have you afraid to chew a turn or a rolaid. So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Snowmobile News The old time doctors didn't have much to work with. The family doctor came to your bedside, took your pulse, tapped your chest and had you stick out your tongue and say ah-h. Somehow you felt better just to have the doctor call. He left a few little pink pills with orders to call him the next morning if you weren't feeling better. You usually felt better the next day. If not, the good doctor would give you some pills of a different color. Things do change. The popular belief was to put snow on frostbite. Now that's a no-no. You use luke warm water. Saw Wisconsin win a basketball game from Michigan State in three overtime periods. That was a thriller. None could deny Wisconsin a win in any sport. Our only complaint was watching four • Snowmobile drag races will be held on Lake Mary of Twin Lakes, Wis., on Sunday, Feb. 6 as part of the Village's 6th annual Winter Festival, Feb. 4, 5 and 6. Racing will begin at noon. out of Michigan State's starters foul out. Calling the fouls was right in this modern day of strict rules. But, it added to our belief that players should not be bounced out unless for certain types of misconduct. The other team gets the free throws. That's enough. You have heard our arguments on fouls before. We die hard. DON'T FORGET TOM LUDWIG Three former McHenry High Warriors are now playing am the Elmhurst College basketball team. All were standout performers in their high school days. The Greenwood Gremlins 4-H Club in cooperation with the Harvard Snow Gophers will sponsor a snowmobile safety certification school beginning on Saturday, February 12th and ending on February 19th. The school to be held at Building D at the McHenry >£ounty Fairgrounds in Woodstock. The session on February 12th will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12:30 while the session on February 19th will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end with a drivers test ending at approximately 3:30 p.m. Those interested in taking the course should call the McHenry County Conservation District, 338-1405, the McHenry County Extension office, 338-3737 or the Harvard Herald at 943-4411. Absent-Minded The telephone rang in the study of the veritable absent-minded professor. "What is it?" an swered the professor. "It's long distance from Neio York," the operator said. "Thanks, I know it is," the professor replied. , M 0 f t £ 6 1 0 1 WEEKS! With the the Broncos attempting to his shot more difficult in this win, Barrington remains in a tie with Libertyville in the North action of the second period off Saturdays game. Reinboldt was held Suburban conference. to four points as the Warriors were defeated despite the hot (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Big Barrington Broncos Beat McHeniy High Warriors 83-74 By Dick Rabbitt A tall talented group of Barrington Broncos defeated the McHenry High Warriors Saturday night by the score of 83 to 74. It was the first win for the Broncos over the Warriors since the 1972-73 season, ex tending through eight games. It was Barrington's 16th win of the season, and their 8th in conference play, leaving them tied with Libertyville. The Warriors never led in the game, and although out- manned, never gave up, and were hustling all the way. Again it was the McHenry duo of Miller and Hurckes who led the Warriors. Miller getting 30 pts. and Hurckes putting 20 through the hoop. Barrington raced out to a 6 to 0 lead before Hurckes's 20 footer got the Warriors on the board. That was as close as the Warriors could get throughout the opening period, and Miller's two baskets in the closing seconds cut the margin to a 24 to 17 first period deficit. In the second period the Warriors came to life, with the rebounding and shooting of Jeff Partenheimer, along with Miller, Hurckes, Thomas, and Reinboldt all getting into the scoring .column, the Warriors rallied to outscore the visiting Broncos 23 to 19 and cut the halftime margin to a respec table 43 to 40 margin. In the opening minutes of the third period the Warriors crept up, with Hurckes's basket, and Miller's basket and two charity tosses to pull within one. DRY SPELL Trailing 47 to 46 and with possession of the ball, the Warriors became careless and two poor shot attempts led to their downfall. Brad Sinclair, Bronco center, took over and led a Barrington surge. In a short span of three minutes the Broncos increased their lead to a safe 62 to 48 margin, and for all intents and purposes put the Warriors out of the ball game. During this period Sinclair canned 4 of 4 attempts, while the Warriors found a lid on the basket but nevertheless came back with the last 5 points of the period to trail 62 to 53. In the final period each team scored 21 pts., but the damage had already been done and the Broncos walked off the floor with their 16th win of the season and 8th in conference play. The Broncos losses their season were to the Warriors and Ridgewood. ^ Again it was a poor third quarter that led to the Warrior downfall. In this period the Warriors managed only 4 of 16 shots. The Warrior defense al though giving up 83 pts. forced the Broncos into 28 turnovers With their pressing defense. Once more it was a two man scoring show for the Warriors, although the fast improving Jeff Partenheimer picked up 10 pts. and several rebounds As said before, the Warriors are going to have to get some more scoring', beside Miller and Hurckes. This seems to be a major concern of Coach Ludwig. The Warriors didn't play that badly This Barrington team is a real solid ball club. They have height, depth, and experience. It seemed when Coach Gary Cook put in a reserve, he was bigger than the fellow he replaced Next weekend the Warriors will try and get two games in, if the weatherman cooperates. Friday they host Zion Benton, and on Saturday travel to North Chicago.
