PAGE 5 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4. 1977 Urgent Need For Hospital Expansion Under Discussion Three leading participants representing three different segments of the community last week discussed the urgent need to expand Memorial Hospital for McHenry County to meet burgeoning demands by the public : • The discussion took place during the annual meeting of the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County association at Crystal Lake last week. Main pressure for expansion comes from the need by some of the ancillary departments, but some non-conforming beds need to be replaced--those in the 1958 addition. Speaking in an effort to alert the public to the need for action soon were Richard Zieman,, McHenry, retiring president; Dr. Ray Pensinger, retiring chief of the medical staff; and Bert Hanson, executive director who has served in that capacity since 1956. Hanson supervised the 1958, 1962 and 1970 expansion programs that modernized the hospital to its present 125-bed rating. Zieman said the long-range planning committee has been talking over a period of two years with hospital building consultants, medical staff members and hospital department heads. He an ticipates a recommendation on the way to meet future needs relatively soon. Dr. Pensinger said several departments are cramped for space but noted action must follow within the constraints of increased medical care costs and problems caused by in flation "Yet, if our hospital is to be a viable force in this community, we need an aggressive program with long- ra/ige plans. It is obvious Crystal Lake and McHenry are doing this." Hanson, who sees evidence of crowding daily, said all departments are burdened but those used most are the X-ray, laboratory, emergency room, physical therapy and elec trocardiography. "We also need space in the business office, housekeeping, linen room, maintenance and medical records. Construction of additional facilities is a 'must' if we are going to keep up with the demands of modern medicine." Hanson said the positive attitude of the long-range planning committee, fully supported by the board, speaks well for future expansion. Hanson had good financial news for association members. Seven* years ago, the board borrowed $1>4 million for a ten- year period. Hanson said at the time he feared it would be necessary to re-finance that loan in three more years. However, he said the board is in a position where it can be paid off sooner, and "the hospital will be debt-free before we embark on a new building program." •- * "We intend to work on a tight budget but I hope that we can include all the necessary areas to provide the modern facilities that will make Memorial Hosptial the No. 1 medical facility in McHenry county," Hanson summarized. "We have the medical staff, the nursing staff, hospital based physicians, and the ancillary help needed to provide excellent medical care. I ask you to realize what a great institution we have in Wood stock and to support the programs I expect the board of directors will approve in the near future." Wayne L. Brown, treasurer, said the hospital's gross revenues showed a million dollar increase over the comparable preceding year. He said long-term debt had been decreased by $290,788 the past year, leaving a long-term debt Of $489,101. Mrs. Vernon M. Barber, auxiliary president, reported the auxiliary has increased its nurse's scholarship from $300 to $500 each a year. The auxiliary has seventeen at tending school with the help of an auxiliary scholarship, valued at $8,520 a year. Two distinguished board members of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County association were honored at the annual meeting. Zieman, board president from McHenry who has served a total of twelve years, and Kenneth Decker, Woodstock, six-year board member and former officer, were recognized for outstanding service as new members from the board. Elected to the board as new members were Frank Kelsey, Crystal Lake, and Richard Thompson, Woodstock. Mrs. Joan Mansfield, chairman of the Woodstock Beautification commission, presented Hanson with a plaque "in recognition of outstanding efforts to create .and maintain a site of distinc tive and handsome appearance which contributes to the visual charm of the townscape." Hanson presented an award to Dr. Pensinger, retiring chief of the medical staff, for his important service to the hospital and the patients during his tenure in that official position. In the organization meeting, the board elected officers, and William I. Caldwell, Jr., Woodstock, a board member for a total of more than eight years, was elected president succeeding Zieman. Caldwell has been the board secretary. Other officers elected include Kenneth Schuh and Donald J. Cooney, vice-presidents; Wayne L. Brown, treasurer; and Farlin Caufield, secretary.
