SECTION 2-PAGE 1 - PLA1NPEALER-WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 16,1977 Tax Law Changed Before you file your federal income tax return, check out these important changes in the law made by the Tax Reform Act of 1976. A new general tax credit that goes to almost everyone who files. It is $35 per exemption or 2 percent of the first $9,000 of taxable income ($4,500 for married filing separately), whichever is more. Families of six or more should use the $35 figure. Others may get more from the percentage option. The minimum and maximum standard deductions have been increased. Minimums are $1700 for single filers, $2100 for married filing jointly and $1,050 for married filing separately. Maximums are $2400 for single people, $2800 for married filing jointly, $1,400 for married filing separately. Child and disabled dependent care expenses are now claimed as a tax credit of 20 percent of eligible expenditures, with top credits of $400 for one depen dent, $800 for two or more. The credit may now be claimed by married couples where one spouse works full-time and the other works part-time or is a full-time student, or where both work part-time, by divorced or separated parents who have custody of a child, and by deserted spouses who have a child, as well as by those already eligible. If certain conditions are met, payments to a relative may qualify. The $35,000 income limitation has been dropped. Eligibility requirements for claiming the earned income credit have been eased. The claimant's total income, which must include earned income, still must be under „ $8,000; however, the dependency requirements have changed. Workers must now pay over half the cost of keeping up a home all year in the U.S. for themselves and their child who was under 19 years of age or a full-time student, or for their adult disabled child who qualifies as a dependent. The retirement income credit has been revised and renamed the credit for the elderly. It has been extended to earned in come and therefore is now available to persons age 65 or over whether their income is earned or retirement income. The reduction of the credit due to earnings and the requirement that the retiree have had annual earnings of $600 for the 10 years im mediately prior to claiming the credit have been eliminated. The maximum incomes on which the credit may be based have increased to $2500 for single persons and $3750 for married couples where both are over 65 and who file jointly. There are special rules for couples where one spouse is over 65 and the other is under 65. The credit phases out when the single retiree's income reaches $12,500, $17,500 for married couples filing jointly when both are over 65. The sick pay exclusion has been eliminated for most people. Requirements for taking deductions for business use of the home and on ex penses for rental of a vacation home have been tightened considerably. Read the tax return instructions carefully before trying to claim any of these. And for 1977 . . . Alimony will become a deduction in arriving at ad justed gross income, similar to moving expenses. TTiis means that people who take the standard deduction will be eligible to claim their payments. For 1976, it is still an itemized deduction. Qualified taxpayers will also be able to make contributions to an Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) for an unemployed spouse. The maximum deduction for moving expenses will be in creased to $3000 from 1976's $2500 ceiling. The distance requirements will drop from 50 miles to 35 miles. Taxpayers over age 65 who sell their homes in 1977 will be able to exclude the entire gain from the sale when the adjusted sale price is $35,000 or less. When the adjusted sale price is over $35,000, the exclusion is prorated. TIL NEXT TIME POET'S CORNER THE BOY WITH NO NAME Every day, I remember when I was still a young boy waiting at the train station for my Dad to come home... He was a good father and loved his family - but he was a weak man, and needed a drink, each day and then forgot to come home. His friends waited inside the place, the "Cristall" was it's name. Everyone liked him, for he bought a drink to all those men... and I sat outside on the steps they called me the boy with curly hair and no name... Hour after hour passed by each clay I was many times so tired and cold, but I waited - I promised Mom to bring him home, sometimes by midnight, then we both walked together in the shadow of the street light.. Many times I did fall asleep outside on the steps of this ugly place, then the singing, squeaking voice of my father, would wake me up as he tried to reach down.. to touch my arm or face. 0, how I hated to see my father that way... I swore - this will never happen to me but my hate was not really that strong for I am - just like him today... The bottle follows me wherever I go... there is a place, like the Cattail in every town and big city. X 1, too, have a family now of my own and a boy... sitting outside on the steps waiting for me, in rain and in snow... ...and tonight again, it is very late X as I begin to walk slowly outside. My head feels so dizzy - my eyes are blinded, I cannot see the boy, hiding away from the light - and suddenly it is too late and I begin to fall... ...never again, can I forget this ugly night from long, long ago. I remember, how I prayed and asked God - for one more chance in my Life and for my boy who was sitting there, so lonely and cold. It was me, his father, unable to see blinded from the addiction to alcohol. If there was a God, he must forgive me and save my poor, drunk soul... ...he must forgive me, what I did as a man to an innocent child. The road was hard to walk - but I found a helping hand and strength and so changed my whole Life... Yes, tonight once again my boy is waiting for me at the station - just like before. But now, we both walk together home and his mother is waiting for us at the door... by Maria Heiser spurgeons Pants Jeans & knits $200TO$800 Typical Values 8^9" 109 109 2.00 4.00 5.00 . 8.00 Select Group-Priced As Marked 200 Ladies Dresses Select Group- Priced As Marked 50-75% Typical Values 9,06 1#)7 19̂ 9 2.00 4.00 7.00 OFF Tops & Blouses Typical Values 1 1 0 , 9 $ 1 4 9 ¥ & 8.00" 5.00 2.00 50 Select Group-Priced As Marked Winter Coats Women's-Girl's-Men's-Boy's 50-75% Typical Values i^o \yto 484jo 3.50 5.00 18.00 Select Group- Priced As Marked T.M INDIGO JEANS really perform like manic! »» -Si ~T'/ • WRINKLE FREE! .
