SECTION 2 - PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23.1977 Extension Comments (By George J. Young, Ex tension Adviser, Agriculture, McHenry county, University of Illinois) Switch Calves To Dry Feed Dairy calves need a liquid diet of milk or milk replacer for the first month of life. But a dry ralf starter mixture is better tor them after they are a month to six weeks old. The dry calf starter mixture must be carefully formulated to meet the nutritional needs of the rapidly growing young calf. It must be high in energy, tasty to the calf, and contain adequate protein, minerals and vitamins. If buying a prepared mixture, get it from a reliable dealer. For anyone mixing his own ration, the University of Illinois recommends the following dry calf starter mixture, 40 percent corn, 25 percent oats. 23 per cent soybean meal, 8 percent dry molasses, 1 percent dicalcium phosphate and 1 percent trace mineralized salt Vitamin A and D sup plements and aurofac or a similar source of the antibiotic, aureomycin, should be added to the mixture. Offer the dry starter while the calf is still on liquid feed. Let the calf eat the amount she wants up to a maximum of five pounds per day. And provide free access to hay and water. Windbreaks The recent severe winter weather has put a serious strain on fuel resources and personal comfort. Windbreaks may successfully reduce wind velocity and heating bills. Documented evidence on exact fuel savings is not available, but it is estimated that a properly located windbreak can reduce heating cost by as much as 15-20 percent in a moderately insulated home. Windbreaks also help to raise temperatures in nearby machine sheds and livestock buildings. For more in formation, ask for leaflet No. 4, "Windbreak Design and Planting". Natural Resource Information Ken Fiske, McHenry County Conservation service director reports that McHenry county has more detailed information on its natural resources than any other county in the nation. The field work for the detailed soil survey was done in the early 1960's and its in terpretation was updated in 1972 The county's en vironmental geology study was completed in the late 1960 s. In 1970 a vegetative inventory was taken as part of the county's forestry study. In 1972 all of the flood plains were identified and the water management study was completed. In 1974 the detailed land use inventory was completed, and in 1975 the new large scale tapagraphic maps became available. \J977 Rural Policy Forum This year's topic at the Mar. 8 d 9 forum is tax choices for Illinois, effects on agriculture and the rural community. The McHenry County supervisor of Assessments and the McHenry County Farm Bureau board have indicated they plan to send representatives to this meeting in Urbana. Ask for details if interested in par ticipating. Price Forecasting This workshop series on sales management of beef, hogs, soybeans and corn is under way with fifty-one local par ticipants. Booklet Tells Functions Of School Boards Anyone who has ever con sidered running for the school board-or wondered why other people run- will be interested in a little booklet entitled, "Your School Board and You." Available at no cost from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), the booklet provides a quick review of what a school board is, what it's like to be a board member, who makes a good board member, and how the average citizen can help strengthen schools and school boards. The sixteen page booklet also reviews school election lawfL, nominating procedures; and, how to prepare for board membership. It includes a widely-adopted code of conduct for school boards and a list of other information sources. Perhaps most useful to everyone is a description of "how to talk to your school" when you have a problem or concern. To obtain a copy of "Your School Board and You," send a name and address to IASB, Box £$04, Springfield, 111. 62708. Bulk quantities are available to <flubs and organizations. To 'Kick The Habit' At Seminar Often, people trying to overcome a bad habit tell themselves that if they wait long enough the problem will just go away. , . "That's waiting for Santa Claus, waiting for Prince Charming. I call it magical thinking," explains Ted Graves, who leads a McHenry County college seminar in how to overcome your habits. "Santa Claus comes once a year, but only to kids under ten," Graves says, pointing out that there are no easy ways to give up overeating, smoking, or being depressed. There are successful ways to do it however, Graves explains, including learning to talk to yourself and learning to not measure your human worth by your behavior. The 'Overcoming Habits' seminar, one of more than thirty workshops and seminars being offered at MCC this spring, will meet for three hours on Feb. 2 8 and three hours on Mar. 7 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the McHenry County college campus. It is one of several seminars Graves and others who work for the Family Services and Mental Health clinic for McHenry county are offering in conjunction with the college. Graves explains that the seminar will be geared to the habits of the people who sign up for the seminar. The par ticipants will learn how to deal with negative feelings, antl will also learn how to make their thoughts coincide with (heir goals. "You begin to have people recognize that they are totally in charge of themselves. You only defeat yourself by blaming your problems on others." Graves said. Another of the seminars offered in conjunction with Family Services and Mental Health clinic is "Marriage in the Seventies", a personal look * at the institution of marriage and what it means to the in dividual J. Scott Campbell, one of the leaders of the seminar, ex plains that the live-week seminar, which begins Feb. 24, will include a look at how marriage styles have changed historically and will include group discussions and role playing. The seminar is not therapy for marriages with problems, but instead is a chance for the participants to look at them selves in relation to marriage in their lives, Campbell said The seminar will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the college campus. People may register by phone up to ten days before the start of both seminars. After that time registration may be done in person at MCC. For information on these and other seminars being offered this spring, telephone the college at 455-3700. The Shoe Fits Most shoes in Colonial America fit both feet.
