They want their children to have all the ad vantages that were not available 25 or 30 years ago. As a result, many parents go to great lengths to provide their children with the things the parents didn't have in their own childhoods. This is a very natural and, in most cases, a commendable attitude. But there is one thing most parents had that today's children should not have...measles. It used to be that having measles was just part of growing up. It also used to be that many children were left with vision, hearing or mental deficiencies, and some died, as a result of having had measles. But, in today's world, children don't have to have measles. There is a vaccine which will prevent it. One shot of this vaccine will protect your child from measles and its possible tragic aftermaths. In the last few months, outbreaks of measles have occurred in several areas of the United States, including two or three sections of Illinois. And the majority of these cases have occurred in the junior high and high-school age groups. Only time will tell how many of these children will have visionyhearing, or mental handicaps lov the rest of their lives. Vy If ydtifhave children, and they haven't as yet been protected against measles, call your physician or local health department today, and arrange to have them immunized as soon as possible. ^ The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends measles immunization for children as soon as they reach fifteen months of age. As loving parents, we want to give our children every possible advantage. Growing up without measles is one advantage we can all give our children Measles im munization is available from your physician or local health department. Or, if you live in an area that has no local health department and you cannot see a physician, the state health department will make arrangements to have your children immunized. Just contact: Illinois Department of Public Health, Immunization Program. 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, 111., 62761. Have your children im munized now...it's a loving thing to do! ADA Suggests Sugarless Gum The American Dental association says it is better to chew sugarless gum rather than gum that contains sugar A number of research studies, the ADA says, point out that some of the sugarless sweetening agents do not contribute significantly to dental decay when they are used in gums and confections i as replacements for sugar. \ On the other hand, foods and beverages that contain ex cessive amounts of sugar invite tooth decay. How does the decay process work? It begins with bacterial plaque, the sticky colorless substance that is present in everyone's mouth. Shortly after consuming sugary foods or beverages, the bacteria in the plaque begins to produce acids that attack tooth enamel. With frequent and repeated exposure to sugary substances, these acids wear down the tooth enamel and eventually cause decay. In order to control the decay process, one must control plaque with proper diet and oral hygiene. By cutting down on sugary foods, beverages and snacks, including chewing gum and other confections, one can break the decay chain. Area Businesses Receive Charters Secretary of State Alan J Dixon announced recently the issuance of domestic cor poration charters to two area businesses. Charters were given to AJS Publications incorporated, 229 Briar court, Island Lake, and also to Condor Construction company, 812 Allen avenue, McHenry DOCTOR CHARGED In a complaint filed last week by the Illinois Department of Registration and Education, an Arlington Heights medical doctor was charged with selling controlled drugs to state un dercover agents for no medical purpose. A three-month in vestigation of the doctor was conducted by the department's medical coordinator's office prior to the filing of the com plaint i
