SECTION 2-PAGE 12-PLAINDEALER--WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1977 EDITORIflLS Dreams Of Spring This is the time of year we dream visions of grandeur while looking through seed catalogues. The pictures of the full-grown fruit or vegetables make the mouth water, and we anticipate great things These great expectations often come down to earth as the season gets under way and the insects, weather and weeds do their natural part On the other hand, sometimes we are amply rewarded with the fruits of our labor land for financial outlay) and these become the memorable years. -- Growing flowers or vegetables, like just about everything else these days, is a science. If one approaches the process with the latest scientific knowledge and knowhow, results can be quite good. A garden is both good exercise and fun. if one doesn't make it too large on the basis of spring enthusiasm derived from pictures in catalogues And the time may come when a knowledge of gardening and growing things will be important to your survival. Boosting Salaries The latest to join the effort to hike the salaries of bureaucrats is a leading conservative columnist who points out that the poor federal bureaucrats have enjoyed only a small percentage pay increase in recent years. Citing a study group (they always find cause for higher pay) he says we are losing talent, that many are frozen at present salary levels, etc." So what? Millions of harder-working Americans are also at fixed salaries, and some have seen income decrease in recent years (as taxes to pay for government went up). Government service pay was never intended to be financially comparable to the best civilian jobs. It's what the words imply-- government service. It offers greater security, many more benefits, and other advantages, compared to civilian employment. All this propaganda about agencies being unable to hire top talent is mostly that--propaganda. Government pay levels and conditions are so lush today U.S. agencies can almost invariably hire private employees away from private industry. There's no surge of employees quitting government jobs. In fact, long lists of applicants are ready to fill 90 percent of them. If some can't be immediately filled, fine. Money saved. There're enough government personnel to do the necessary work. This columnist and others seem to miss the main point The nation can't afford a pay hike. Doesn't anyone ever think any more of the moral question of spending money the Treasury and taxpayers don't have? It doesn't matter that it's a relatively small outlay, compared to bigger boondoggles. The nation is looking at a $75 billion deficit in the coming year and doesn't have the money to raise federal salaries. And, that is how it really is! If we read the Bible, many times we are reminded by Jesus that his ministry was to the needs of all mankind, to the poor, the invalid, even the sinner. Membership in the family of Jesus is available without reference to race or color. The door is always open and we may enter at any time. We remain so long as we follow the message of Christ, which is "do the will of my Father which is in heaven..." Attend the Church of your choice this Sunday. For Your Information Dear friends. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, suggested: "Don't take your self too seriously. I walk about every day and it is surprising how fen people are smiling or look happy. It gives me a lift to see a beautiful smile and sparkling eyes. Try smiling, you'll like it." Respeetfullv. PETER AVJUSTEN & SON FUNERAL HOME McHenry, Illinois 385*0063 Housing Assistance The McHenry County Housing authority received a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in October, 1976, to administer the Section "B" Housing Assistance Payment program in McHenry county. This federal program, initiated with the Housing and Community Development act of 1974, provides rental payments for low and moderate income people living in privately owned housing units. The Housing authority wishes to inform persons of the status of this program, now in its fourth month of operation. The administrators began taking applications in early November. In the first two weeks, 187 applications were received from McHenry county residents. Because the program is limited to assisting 100 families, forty-five elderly and fifty-five non-elderly applicants were chosen to participate in the first year of this program. A reservation was made for forty-four families living or working in the two cities of the county which had Housing Assistance plans in 1976, that is Crystal Lake: twenty-four families, and Woodstock: twenty families , More than 90 percent of the applications received have been from very low income families. This program has received wide acceptanceun McHenry county. With the twenty-five applications processed to date, not a single landlord has refused to participate, and many have expressed their wholehearted approval of the concept of the Housing Assistance Payments program. The gravest problem has been in finding rental units for large families, these being almost totally non-existent in McHenry county. Anyone having questions about this program, should call Nancy Briscoe at 1-338-7752. VIEWING ELECTION 'Editor: "Now that all the filings are in for our candidates in the upcoming election, perhaps it's time to mention a few im portant suggestions t<j, help us choose the best possible can didates to represent us in our city government. "Unfortunately, all too often people go out and vote without having any knowledge of who they're really voting for. Many people make their choices because of the candidate's address being near their own, or an equally ridiculous reason "We must consider all candidates who are running for office. We should not assume things about either our present officials now in office and seeking re-election or about our more unknown new candidates. "'We owe it to ourselves to check into the past and present records of all who are seeking positions. "We must make every effort to find the person who will do the best possible job to make our city government one that will be honest and fair. We need officials who will help make our town a better place to live and raise our children. "Occasionally, people may run for office on a dare or strictly to seek revenge Thank goodness this is a rare oc currence and most persons do The Overhaul n C SPS seek office because their in tention is to make our govern ment a smooth running, con cerned and respected operation. "It is our duty to research the backgrounds of all eligible persons. We are the only, ones who can decide who we want to represent us in our city. "Hopefully, this spring we'll all make an effort to find out all there is to know about the candidates "The good facts are always plentiful but how do we uncover any of the facts that may be hidden from us which very possibly could affect how we vote" Perhaps there is a way to get a basic biography on all the persons runningf. Then we would be able to check them out ourselves by looking into their past and inquiring about their present. "This is a time consuming process, I'm sure, but look at it this way, isn't it better to take a little time now to investigate than to choose someone we know nothing about or choose someone we believe we know because of their previous time in office Actually, without having any background in formation we may put someone in office who will lower our standard of government or on the other hand, we may re-elect when another person may be a lot more capable than the present office holder. "Be concerned about your government. By all means, be sure and vote but before you do, be sure you know who you're voting for! "Let this year be the year ygii choose to become a little i* volved Please, you owe it to your family, friends, neigh bors, city, and of coursji. yourself to help elect the be«8 persons to serve us all. Take the time to help make McHenCy one of the finest communities to live in and work in in all tht state by electing the people wlip can make it just that. "Valorie Hobson < "4308 Sioux Ln.
