Again the Warriors demonstrated that they can play with the best of them, but the ball just doesn't seem to fall in the right place at the right time. RTE. 31, McHENRY 385-2100 The Warrior i Ken Ludwig - Basketball Coach With the crowd on its feet, confusion broke loose in the Mustang gym. A dead ball foul took place. Billy Hurckes made the shot, but missed the shot on the technical foul of Elfering, Mustang guard Coach Dick Starkey got into the act and he was assessed a "T". Marty Phillips then missed the free throw. Trailing by two with 12 seconds remaining and the Mustang's in possession. Bill Hurckes stole an inbqund pass and drove half the length of the court to knot the game at 70 all. With 3 seconds on the clock Mary Deener fouled Hutchinson, but the big fellow missed the shot, the Warriors grabbed the rebound to send the game into overtime. In the overtime the Mustangs made one basket and 10 of 10 free throws, while the Warriors Miller and Paulsen got the buckets and Steve Knox canned 2 charity tosses and Marty Deener one. The game was won at the free throw line. The Warriors outscored the Mustangs from the field 31 to 26, but the Mustangs made 30 of 40 charity tosses, while the Warriors hit 15 of 22. The Warriors did not get a bonus shot in the second half until 1:30 was remaining in the game. Again I would question the officials on some of their calls, especially in the final period. When two teams run and gun. S Colorful, active, sometimes resembling a conductor as he directs his players' movements on the court--that's Ken Ludwig. From the bench, the popular coach often reflects in his face his team's fortunes on the court. With just one win since the new year, the team record <X-14. worst since '68-'69) doesn't look good. But the coach always seems to get his team up for regional play. The Warriors face Woodstock on Wednesday, Mar. 2, in the opening round of the tournament, here in McHenry. Ludwig has directed his team to four regional titles in the last five years, so--Don't count Ken and the Warriors out yet! < STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD) there is going to be contact, but on the part of both teams not just one team The Warrior defense forced the Mundelein five into 20 turnovers throughout the game Friday the regular season closes with a game at Crown. The inspired Warriors, playing their greatest game of the season, enjoyed an 11 point lead with four minutes remaining in the game, but then as in the past disaster struck, and they went down to a hearbreaking defeat at the hands of the "Cats" 73 to 71. In all fairness to the Warriors, there were some questionable calls by the officials in the closing minutes that didn't help their cause. From the opening tipoff one could sense that the Warriors had come to play ball. With a pressing defense, and Brian Miller's hot hand in the opening quarter, (he had 12 pts.) the Warriors raced out to a 22 to 17 lead. Billy Hurckes' three point play widened the lead, and the Quincy, Illinois. Ray Koch of Justice accomplished his BIG 3 this year with bucks taken in Vermont and Illinois and a doe in Wisconsin. Don Eckmann downed his first arrowed deer and cap tured the club's Traveling Duke Adams largest deer trophy with his 153 lb., 8 pointer. Reservations for the Banquet and Dance can be made, with any NIB member immediately. Warrior defense continued to play havoc with the Cat offense. Steve Knox's 15 footer kept the advantage of five, and Ken Durkin's three point play in the closing seconds enabled the Warriors to walk off at the intermission with a 40 to 33 margin. Knox's basket at the beginning of the second half put the Warriors"ahead by 10, their biggest lead of the night, and with Miller driving for the basket, and making them, along with Hurckes and Par tenheimer scoring, the Warriors went into the final period with a comfortable 11 pt. margin. TOO CAUTIOUS In the opening minutes of .the final period, it seemed that the Warriors decided to abandon their usual style of play Playing what I would consider a little too cautious in the opening minutes, they were unable to score in the first couple of minutes. However, the Wildcats were unable to capitalize, and when Jeff Partenheimer was sent to the bench with five fouls with 5:13 remaining, the Warriors still held a 9 point edge 61 to 52 Hurckes' basket at the 4:00 mark put the Warriors ahead by 11, 65 to 54. Then the tide of the game turned completely around for the Warriors Forced into mistakes, bad passing, etc, the Cats began to claw back, and in the span of a minute and seven seconds narrowed the margin to just 2 points. Roberts' long shot tied the game at 65 all with 2:37 remaining, but Marty Deener's three point play gave hope to Warrior fans as they led 68 to 65 at the 2:15 mark. Erickson and Durett put the Wildcats ahead for the first time since early in the game, and the gym went up for grabs as the huge crowd on both sides rose to their feet. Miller's free throw narrowed the margin to 71-70 with a minute remaining, and his free throw again with 34 seconds remaining tied the game at 71 all. The Cats after a time out, worked the ball around the key, and with just two seconds remaining on the clock, Mat thews 25 footer proved the downfall for a fighting Warrior team The Warriors outplayed the Wildcats from start to finish. If ever a team deserved to win a ball game our Warriors did on Friday night. They gave 110 percent, and a dejected, disappointed Coach Ludwig in a short locker room talk, had nothing but praise and ad miration for a gallant group of boys who did everything asked of them, but to come out a With the conference race out of reach, we can only hope that the squad will shake off the effects of this defeat, and point to the regional to be held here the first week in March If they The McHenry High swim ming team closed out a suc cessful dual meet season with a 92 to 59 win over Stevenson High School last week.
