Judy Vyduna.Jill Welter, Lori Wilson and Diane Ziemba system worked out many, many years ago by a British Admiral. Sir Francis Beaufort. It 's still the system used by most weather officials. The Beaufort numbers be gin with 1, which is a one to three knot wind, and continue up to 12. which is a wind above 65 knots in velocity. A wind of Beaufort number 8. for example, is a fresh gale with winds up to 40 knots. Number 4 means moderate wind be tween 11 and 16 knots. The Beaufort arrow, used on weather maps and charts, denotes the velocity of wind according to the number of barbs attached. A circle which represents the head of the arrow indicates clear or cloudy weather. If the inside of the small circle is clear, the weather is clear; if it 's half blacked-in. the sky is partly cloudy, etc. * * * * One of the mysteries of life is how some people manage to think so well of themselves. As drivers develop a re source of data related to handling, safety consultant Haskell B. Schultz suggests that knowledge of stopping distances under various con ditions would cut the acci dent rate by some 85 per cent . providirg the knowledge was used in developing re lated driving habits. • Schultz, author of a hand book " on driving, observes that at 20 miles per hour, the auto travels approximately 22 feet from the time the motorist sees danger to when he applies the brakes. The entire stopping distance at that speed is 52 feet, under normal conditions. That "re action time" increases to 55 feet at a speed of 50 m.p.h with an overall stopping dis tance of 243 feet. *. ••• BEST YET-The Warrior varsity swimming team ended the dual meet season with a 13-5 record, which is the best in the school history.
