(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Marian Central Wins Regional Opening Game By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bud Grover's Marian Central Hurricanes as expected won the opening game of the Marian regional in Class A basketball Monday night. The top seeded "Canes" had no trouble with Harvard as they won easily 69 to 51. The "Canes" with Ringness, Oeffling and Brix all hitting from out jumped to an early 16 to 8 lead at the end of the initial period. The second period saw the Marian five completely dominate the game as they outscored the visitors 20 to 9 to take a 36 to 17 lead into the intermission. The Hornets fought back in the third quarter and outscored Marian 17 to 12, but in the final period, Long, the Marian center, took control scoring 4 baskets and taking down numerous rebounds to insure the win. The "Canes" are now 13 and 12 on the season, while Harvard finished with a lone win against 21 defeats. Marian will play Hebron on Wednesday night in the semi finals, and are expected to advance to the finals and play Marengo the number two seeded team. The Food and Drug Administra tion has recommended a pro posal that would require canners to print "drained weight"--the weight of the food without the liquid. Drained weight is establish ed after the food has been processed and stored for a given period. The McHenry sophomore basketball team lost a pair of thrillers the past weekend when they went down to defeat in overtime at Libertyville 61 to 59 and on Saturday lost to Mun- delein 57 to 55. Zeller led the scoring in the heartbreaking loss to Liber tyville with 20 pts. as the Warriors came from behind to tie the score only to lose in overtime. On Saturday night Don Bentz, who seems fully recovered from an injury, led the Warriors with 24 pts. in a losing cause to Mundelein 57 to 55. The young Warriors close out the season Friday at Crown. Failure to heed withdrawal times, es pecially medicated feed with drawal times, remains the single most frequent cause of illegal residues. Read and heed withdrawal times print ed on drug labels and feed tags. Mary Pinkstaff thinks spring is just around a corner or two and is enthusiastic about the coming season for the McHenry Pigtail League. The girls, 7 to 15 years of age (inclusive), will register Sat., Feb 26 and Sat., Mar. 5 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at the Fire House in McHenry. If you want to play ball, be sure to register and spread the word around to other Pigtailers. Don't miss the dates men tioned. Wouldn't want you to strike out before the season starts. Looking through some old clippings, we found one without a date on it, but people were raising hell about the price of coffee going up to 15 cents a cup Some said they would switch to tea. One fellow was quoted as saying, "We'll drink it, but we won't like it." Remember that old song "I wish I was in Peoria--Peoria today." I would change that to Sarasota where the White Sox are pitching their tents. In the past few days, two good friends crossed over our Welcome Mat, another one phoned with cheerful news. If that is small town, you can have all the big cities in the world. Grandchildren keep you young. So they say. They keep you busy. That we attended a Cub Scout dinner at the Hilltop school and saw some great feats of magic performed by the boys. This week we watched a play at a George Washington party in Mrs. Partenheimer's second grade room. We saw a patient, efficient teacher guide her little pupils through their acts. It's all fun. Mrs. Partenheimer has an interesting display of pictures on the board, showing McHenry then and now. She credits a high school helper with this nifty arrangement. When we first read that Dick Allen may return to the White Sox, our reaction was--Oh, no! Now the writers seem to think Allen could be a big help as a designated hitter who would also draw some fans through the gates. If Bill Veeck can convince Allen to report for batting Credit the New York Post's Henry Hecht in that great little magazine. Baseball Digest, with the following: "Babe Ruth. Has anyone ever had a better year than Ruth's 1921? All he did that year was collect 204 hits, 44 doubles, 16 triples, 59 home runs, 177 runs scored, 171 RBI, 144 walks, 17 stolen bases, a .378 batting average and an .846 slugging average." The present day superstars couldn't carry the Babe's bat to the plate. From Tarpon Springs, Florida comes a card with the following message: It makes us think. It makes us laugh To Think You want our autographs. Gordon G. Stringer M.C.H.S. Coach 1922-1928 Alex J. Justen Class of 1928 - M.C.H.S. Being right up to the deadline keeps me from recalling the good days when Coach Stringer was in McHenry High. That could take up part of a book. PICKUPS- ~ People still have faith in the future of this country. Look at all the thirty year mortgages. If the Good Lord wanted us to see the sunrise, He would have scheduled it for later in the day. The world is full of cactus but we don't have to sit on it. Area Players Fare Well In Tennis Meet In the continuing indoor tennis tournament at the Racket club in Crystal Lake, McHenry area players fared well in recent matches. In the Men's "C" division, Frank Johnson, McHenry, swamped Rich Curran, Crystal Lake, 6-2, 6-2. In Men's "B" Doubles, Mike Costigan, McHenry, teamed with John Kugler of Woodstock to rout Bob Klisz and Dennis Pflederer of Crystal Lake, 6-3, 6-2. However, on the distaff side, Anita Fink, McHenry and her partner, Yvonne Hute, Crystal Lake, lost their Ladies "B" Doubles match to Ann Wall and Jo Frantz, both of Crystal Lake, 6-4, 6-4. The winter-long^ournament is approaching the finals rounds presently, with numerous McHenry players still alive. There are twelve separate divisions of play, including Class "A", "B", and "C" levels in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, and women's doubles.
