MARCH 4. 1977 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March :v, 1927) The work being ac­ complished by the different contractors on the new bridges being built in this locality is great, and the construction work is progressing at a good rate of speed. 'The concrete abutments at each end of the bridge are completed and the men are building forms for the laying of the concrete floor of the bridge. If the, weather continues favorable they hope to have the concrete poured and the floor in by the end of next week. Sheriff Cyrus Sanford added two more prisoners to his county jail roster Saturday, when Walter Bender, age 17, and Axel Johnson, 15, were apprehended on a charge of breaking into summer cottages on Fox River near Johnsburg. Frank Kern, who played with the McHenry Grays for ,two. seasons, is gaining con­ siderable publicity on the sport pages of the big newspapers since he joined the Chicago Cubs at their training camp. He attracted the attention of Manager Joe McCarthy of the Cubs and will have more than an ordinary trial with the Bruins during the Spring training period. An announcement appears on another page of this issue by the McHenry Artificial Ice Co., a new business in our city operated by C. Unti and D.F. Givens. The company will have a delivery service in and near McHenry, beginning Saturday of this week. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 4, 1937) Many farmers of this com­ munity have been especially busy the past few weeks preparing to move, having decided several months ago to change their location for one which they hope will be of greater benefit to them. March first is the official moving date but the job of moving machinery, livestock and the entire possessions of a farmer is no small matter and the work is started usually a week or more in advance. During the absence of the Very Rev. Msgr. Charles S. Nix, pastor of St. Mary's church, who attended the Eucharistic Congress in Manila, the services of the church are in charge of the assistant pastor, Father Francis J. Miller. The last of a series of programs was given at the Community high school Monday evening and was Well received by those who heard it. The entertainment was given by the Hugo Brandt concert company in a presentation of melody, song and story which was given free of charge for adults and students. Charles Unti returned home last week from a most en­ joyable trip to Florida, where he visited points of interest, called on the many McHenry people wintering in the sunny south, and was also the guest of Chicago friends Hebron, known as a strong tournament school, once more lived up to their reputation by whipping McHenry 32 to 27 at the Palatine district meet last Saturday night. Mr. Shadle, formerly of Ringwood, par­ ticipated in the last of the fall series of atomic bomb tests near Las Vegas, Nev. In Sep­ tember of last year he was sent to work on the electronic in­ strumentation incidental to the tests. For the first time in the history of the county, three McHenry men will be Democratic candidates in making up a full slate for county offices. Atty. Robert A Stueben of Center street, McHenry, will be a write-in candidate at the primary election in April for nomination to the post of state's attorney. Charles M. Adams, who previously indicated 'that he would not be a candidate for the office of coroner, will be an active candidate seeking that office. The third McHenry man is Emil Simon. Jr.. of Riverside drive, who is a candidate for circuit clerk. A new McHenry business opens its doors to the public on Friday, March 7, when Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tonyan welcome friends to their new store. Tonyan's Home Furnishings, at 208 Elm street. They plan to carry a full line of items for the home, including floor and wall coverings, draperies, blinds, slip covers, etc. The local Veterans of Foreign Wars clubhouse was broken into again early Friday mor­ ning. Entrance was gained through a window sometime between 12:30 a.m., and H o'clock in the morning and a few bottles of whiskey and about twenty dollars were taken. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 9, 1967) The week starting Sunday, March 12, marks National Girl Scout week, when the ap­ proximately 250 Girl Scouts in fifteen troops in Sybaquay council, Valley View Neigh­ borhood, will join in celebrating the fiftv-fifth anniversary of Girl Scouts, U.S.A. Members of the benefit committee for the St. Valen­ tine's Day card party and dessert luncheon, sponsored by the McHenry Women's club, are congratulating each other on what turned out to be the club's most successful benefit to date. A checlcin the amount of $600, representing this year's proceeds, was presented to William J. Bolger, president of the McHenry public library. Three juveniles were ap­ prehended by Woodstock police last Saturday on a charge of stealing a car in McHenry. Two of the youth were from this community and a third from Winnebago county. Thcv were 15 and 16 years of age. Petit jurors scheduled to appear in court -March 20^n- clude Elsie Gustalson. Marion Hocker.--Helen Nuber. John Huehne, Helen Fleck and Jack Schramm of McHenry, and John Van Kanegan of„Wonder Lake The jinx which has plagued Warrior basketball teams for years once again reared its ugly head this past Tuesday when the host Larkin team won 70-69 in overtime. The jinx is that the orange and black can never seem to get by an Elgin team in regional play. Jim Laursen, McHenry's 180 lb junior, traveled down to the State Wrestling tournament but lost his first match. His season record is 25-1-0 and he Will inost. likely return next year as an important pnd very impressive 180-lb. wrestler.
