The tax benefit allowing ah individual to exclude a certain amount 6f sick pay from talx each year has been virtually eliminated and replaced with B much narrower provision, the Internal Revenue Service said. The new change in the law, retroactive to Jan. 1,1978, doeis away with the up to $100 a week sick pay which, under certain conditions, an employee could exclude from taxation. Now, an exclusion is only allowed for persons under age 65 who retire with a permanent disability. Such an individual can exclude from taxation up to $5,200 a year of disability inh come. The $5,200 maximum exj- clusion is reduced once income reaches $15,000 and phases odt when income reaches $20,200, the IRS said. In addition, an IRS official noted that a certificate from a qualified physician attesting t6 the permanent and total disability must be attached te the Form 2440 (Disability In come Exclusion) which is used to request the exclusion. Internal Revenue regulations state that the certification give the physician's name and address and should also contain an acknowledgment that the physician understands the certification will be used to claim an exclusion for per manent and total disability on the taxpayer's income tasi return. Failure to provide the cer tification will delay processing of the return as (he IRS will have to correspond with the taxpayer, asking the individual to send in the statement, it was further noted. If there is no reply from the taxpayer, the exclusion will be disallowed. Taxpayers can find ad ditional information in Publication 522, "Tax In formation on Disability Payments" and by checking the instructions in their tax packages. Move To End i" Social Security " •- Earnings Limit Congressman John B. An derson (R-m.) has announced that he is co-sponsoring a bill to remove the earnings limitation on individuals 65 years over receiving Social Sect benefits. According to . earnings ceiling, an individi between 65 and 72 is penally by $1 in Social security for each $2 earned, over a lii of S3,000 per year. "I am co-sponsoring thjp legislation, introduced by Rep. Gilman of New York, in orderto deal fairly with those who have paid into the Social Security system, and expect to receive a steady retirement income. I don't see why we should discourage someone over the age of 65 who is willing and able to work from doing so, by reducing that citizen's Social Security benefits. I think this is discriminatory and unfair, and can make it harder for many older people to make ends meet," declared Anderson. AMERICAN FAMILY ANNOUNCES TNI Anthony V. Fick 1206 S.
