When crops and industry greatly increased after the wars to end all wars ceased, Prohibition was recognized but to no avail, the wealthy had their own supply of liquor and ale. The game of football was the national craze and Lindbergh had them all in a daze, from a flying postman and barnstormer he to the spirit of St. Louis' flight across the sea. The Presidential post lost part of its fame when a man came in. Hoover by name, for Rugged Individualism he was the man "Let the people be" that was his plan. But a mantle struck, a mantle of doom it hit on Black Thursday and lowered the boom, many banks closed and bread lines formed factories closed and tempers warmed. Prices lowered as the Stockmarket crashed atheism arose and the communists flashed, unemployment grew as it grew colder resentment grew from an ember to a smoulder. The jobless arose and thought of a way they could change it all on election day, Roosevelt voted in and Hoover pushed out F.D.R. hoped his ideas would carry some clout. He closed ^all banks on a holiday tenfold the economy and prices in stay, hi ™ew Deal was good and started strong in stay, and Congress believed and just went right along. Much legislation was enacted and called the "Alphabet Soup" TheC.C.C., F.H.A. andF.D.I.C. were part of this group, more and more bills were passed and the list was long but the Supreme Court said "Unconstitutional and wrong". Roosevelt won out, so you can say his ideas held the depression at bay, our country held strong and would not bend its people have proved they can win in the end. Early pioneers found limestone plentiful at shallow depth, hewed fence supports from the limestone blocks in preference to cutting valuable trees. I', •llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllB) McHenry County college students are busy this week forcing spring flowers to bloom early and rebuilding a small greenhouse. The preparations by mem bers of the college's Agriculture club are for the annual exhibit at the Chicago Flower and Garden show which will be held March 26 through April 3. The college's booth will be located at the far north end in the "Feature E" section This year's exhibit by the Agriculture club students will feature a 25-foot-tall Silver Maple tree, a Japanese garden, and a large area of evergreens. Flowering plants will include quince, forsythia, and shad- blow serviceberry. The Ag. club members (MCC students and Elgin Community college students enrolled in the MCC agriculture programs) raised the money to buy the plants and construction materials for the display by growing corn and soybeans for resale on a portion of the vacant land at the MCC campus, and by holding plant sales in the MCC cafeteria. Sales were held at Thanksgiving and Christmas, with another plant sale planned March 7, 8, and 9. The students and college instructors who man the booth at the show provide in formation about McHenry County college's Ornamental Horticulture program to show visitors. But they also spend a good deal of time answering questions about everything from aphids on house plants to the type of grass that i^est for a lawn. "It gives a person a chance to use what he has learned," explains Jerry Solon, one of the FREE ATTIC INSULATION UP TO 6" OF INSU LATION FREE WITH ANY SIDING JOB! FOR DETAILS CALL: (815) 385-9427 (815) 653-9720 Ag. club members who is in volved in preparing for-the exhibit. The work to prepare for the college's exhibit began last fall when students submitted suggested designs for the layout of the display to a committee of MCC teachers. Once the design was chosen, plant materials were pur chased. Students are now busy preparing the wooden benches and other construction needed for the display. Others are ^ keeping the foliage and leaves of rhodedendrons. moist with warm water in rented greenhouse space to force them into bloom and giving similar care to the other plants which will be used in the display. - Don Barrett, coordinator of the MCC Agriculture program, explains that this is the fourth year the college has par ticipated in the show. Barrett said, "The exhibit is a working display', designed to give flower show visitors in formation rather than just something pretty to look at." MCC students who will work at the booth during the show will also have time to study other exhibits at the show," Barrett said. Solon explained some instructors have even based assignments for hor ticulture classes on the various displays at the show. MCC is one of several educational institutions with displays at the show, but it is the only local community college in the metropolitan area with a" extensive hor ticulture program. Students in all four areas of the program- landscaping and nursery, floral shop management, greenhouse management, and turf management-all participate in ONE DAY INCOME TAX SERVICE CALL 385-4410 for appointment SUBSCRIBE To The McHenry Plaindealer And Save $10.30 Over Newstand Price r FILL OUT AND MAIL OR BRING TO: McHENRY PLAINDEALER 3812 W.
