DIET AND NUTRITION FOR CATS by Debbie Thompson "You are what you eat," is a maxim that holds true for our pets as well as ourselves. Good nutrition helps a' cat*3 resistance to illness. There are many myths revolving around diet. First, milk is good for cats - false! Milk may cause an allergic reaction in adult cats. Second, cats need fish - false! Cats are carnivores. A diet too high in fish can cause skin problems, cystitis, and other kidney distress. If you must feed fish, make sure it is cooked, and only as an occasional treat. A cat's little system cannot tolerate a diet high in rich, fatty foods, and the result could be diarrhea. If there are no other symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or running eyes or nose, consider a change in diet. Cottage cheese is a good method of hardening the stool. If diarrhea persists, or the above symptoms develop, call your veterinarian. Weaning a kitten is similar to weaning a baby. Begin with a milk supplement such as KMR, available at local pet shops or from your veterinarian, warm to room temperature, and mix with canned cat food and baby cereal. Gradually increase the amount of cat food After weaning, it is a good idea to mix a teaspoon of canned food with dried food. This adds variety as well as crunchies for tooth maintenance. Always provide fresh drinking water. Exercise is necessary for a healthy cat. Most cats chase around your home, but in ad dition you could provide a cat post or tree. Cats also enjoy an activity period in^an enclosed porch. A cat doesn't need to roam to be happy. He won't be happy attacked by a dog or racoon, hit by a car, or lost on a cold, rainy night. Neither will you. Both of you will also be happier if your cat is neutered or spayed. For more information about diet, or assistant in neutering or spaying your pet, please call Pet Welfare.
