KISER Airman Patrick C. Kiser, son of Mrs. Violet P. Therefore, to per petuate pur prosperity and keep the good will of our neigh bors, a movement has been started to have the state resEock our waters with fish, and we are therefore asking the men and women of this com munity to sign their names to a petition to be presented to our Honorable Governor Len Small, and we believe that with favorable public opinion he will grant us our wish. The old house on the W.E. Whiting farm is being moved this week farther back from the road and in line with some of the other buildings. The work is beine done by Herman Miller and son of Genoa City, Wis. The house is one of the landmarks in McHenry county being almost seventy years old. It was built by George Gage on the section of government land where he had located soon after he came to this locality. The farm was then bought by Amos D. Whiting, father of the present owner, in 1800, where he spent the remainder of his lifetime and where W.E. Whiting was born. A party of surveyors started work on Route 61 here Monday morning. They camc from Genoa City and will work on down the route. Hubert Evans of Woodstock assumed his new duties as manager of the local National Tea Store. He will take the place of Miss Katie King, who has resigned after many months of service as the manager. With the addition of another golf course some time this summer, McHenry can lay claim in being the "Heart of the Golf Country". A deal was closed recently whereaby the farm of S.H. Freund, just north of the city, was purchased by the Orchard Beach Syndicate of Chicago, which is forming a club under the name of the Orchard Beach Yacht and Country club. The officers of the syndicate are president, Arthur L. Michel; secretary, C P. Norager; treasurer, Fox River Valley bank. The land taken over in the deal consists of eighty-nine acres and due to its natural rolling surfaces is considered suitable to be made into one of the finest golf courses in the country. The consideration in the deal is reported to be $40,000. At the regular Tuesday evening Lenten services at St. Patrick's church the beautiful statue of St. Theresa, Little Flower of Jesus, was unveiled. This statue was presented by the people of the parish in memory of Rev. Father N. Riverside drive, McHenry has been selected for technical training at Sheppard AFB, Tex., in the Air Force medical service field. The airman recently com pleted basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex., and studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. McHenry's City Council met to hear an updated engineers' report by H.S. Sundin and L.E. Woodman of the Baxter and Woodman firm, projecting the problems facing the city in sewage treatment facilities. With the annexations and new developments, it is obvious that the present plant will not meet the needs of our rapidly ex panding city. The site of a second plant is the first problem to be resolved. Among the cottages which had been broken into were the Railton cottage at Woodlawn Park and the former Ben Miller cottage at Orchard Beach, which is now owned by Mrs. John Larson of Tecumseh, Mich. Exactly one hundred loaves of bread were exhibited Saturday in the contest spon sored by William Spencer, proprietor of the McHenry Flour Mills, in which thirty dollars were given as prizes for the best loaves of bread. Miss Clara Kaiser was declared the winner, Mrs. C.L. Harrison of Ringwood, second prize, and Mrs. Schlottman of Crystal Lake, third. A farm census will be taken in McHenry county by the various township assessors this coming spring according to information received by County Treasurer Lester Edinger this week. It is believed this will be the first census to be taken of its kind in McHenry county. The census will be taken under the provisions of a law ap proved July 2, 1935. Members of the senior class at the Community high school are trying out this week for parts in the Senior class play, "It's Papa Who Pays". The date for the play has not been definitely set, but it will be some time in April. With only a few more days left for the filing of nomination papers for candidates for city offices, considerable interest in the coming city election is being aroysed with the belief that there will be some keen competition under way to make the election a contested one. Mayor Peter J. Doherty and City Clerk Peter Neiss have already got their petitions out and are the first members of the city board to declare themselves for re-election. Earl R. Walsh, who was a candidate for city clerk two years ago, has signalled his intention of again entering the race. The Agatha shop moved the last of the week to new quarters in the building next door and Miss Ethel Jones is rapidly getting settled in her larger and very pleasant shop. The room just vacated by the Agatha shop is being included in the Central Market, proprietor of which is William Pries, owner of the building. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Friend, who have conducted the Bridge ballroom for more than two years, will leave McHenry soon for Richmond, where they have leased the Osmond building and will open a restaurant and tavern. They plan to open about the middle of April. The store room in the Schneider building on River side drive has been rented by Jack Keenan, artist and decorator, operating under the name of the "20th Century Decorators" who plans to sell souvenirs and pictures of his own painting this summer. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 13, 1952) That McHenry area residents are definitely elec tion-conscious became very clear on Monday of this week when 119 of voting age who had changed their name, reached voting age or moved since the last election registered with Albert Krause, registrar in this community. There were twenty-two changes of address. On Monday of this week , Judge Henry L. Cowlin, in county court, announced that he did not have jurisdiction in the contesting of the recent Lakemoor village election and in addition refused to take action on proceeding with the election of officers. The at torney for residents of the village who wish to proceed with officer election will now take the matter before the Circuit court or the Illinois Supreme court on writ of mandamus. The Terra Cotta Corp. plant on Rt. 31, south of McHenry, a landmark in this area for the past eighty years, was destroyed by fire last Thursday morning, resulting in a loss estimated soon after the disaster at $300,000. The building was occupied by the American Terra Cotta Corp and the American Steel Treating Co. About 300 em ployees were out of work as a result of the fire, including a number from McHenry. A total of $1,850 has been collected for the Red Cross fund drive, according to a report given by Chairman Robert J. Conway. The safety cam paign is timely, especially at this season of the year, in an ticipation of the hundreds of visitors who will be driving through the city within the next few months, adding to motoring hazards which always exist The final date for farmers to sign up under the 1952 Agricultural Conservation program is March 31. This is the program under which payments are made to assist and encourage farmers in carrying out certain approved conservation work. One or more of the practices offered are already needed on every farm in the county. A total of 24,264 motor vehicles were registered in Illinois during 1951 with license fees paid amounting to $351,804.04. This included 19,897 passenger cars and 3,532 trucks and busses.
