MUSIN' AND MEANDERIN' ((.onlintirtl from papr 11 among such problems as mass transit, jobs and crime. The department calls feeding semi-domesticated birds a "national pastime". Biolgists recently advocated making „ feed available in areas of heavy cover to help wildlife survive the winter. But they stress this does not apply to urban- dwelling wild things -- only to country birds. So where does that leave McHenry? We're not a metropolis, but a pleasant mixture of urban and rural living. Our ducks believe they 're country birds and so do the people who feed them. Prior to this latest advice from the Department of Con servation, some con servationists have told us these seini-domesticated ducks have failed to go South for too long Now. they say, the old ducks and their offspring will only die if they remain through the winter without food handouts from their human friends. This earlier advice suggested using restraint and not feeding the birds during good weather. When the winter winds blow, if they remain, the signal was "go ahead". We've had some cheaters (they admit to that) but for the most part conscientious people have tried to hold back summer feeding and be generous in the winter. McHenry s birds are smart. They know a concerned public won't iet inem starve, and the big majority select to stay. A nuisance? Sometimes! Appealing? All the time! They're part of the McHenry community, and it isn't likely their friends will let them down K A F LARGE, TALENTED CAST IN "CAMELOT REHEARSAL |(.ontiiiurd from I) role in "Camelot."
