On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbin -a* j:j: With the nice balmy weather this week the athletic •••• ^eams at McHenry high school are getting a workout. If the weather holds up, the baseball teams will play every day but today, and that includes doubleheaders with ;jjj Mundelein tomorrow morning". The tennis team is booked j:j: solid throughout the week, and theThincladshad one meet g: and are preparing for a big Saturday in Oswego. It seems too good to be true with all this nice weather in the middle of April. Like all of you, we at the high school ft hope it keeps up with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. •ij: With all the talk of school finances and cutbacks in this *: area, other parts of the state are more fortunate. Had the £: opportunity to spend a few days last week in Quincy. The £: big talk in that town is how to spend $2.4 million on outside & athletic facilities. £: It seems several years ago a real sport's fan of Quincy high school died, and left the school a cool million for ::j:j outside athletic facilities. However, like all gifts there was :j:j: a catch to it. The school had to match the million. Well, somehow the school board carne up with the ;:j:i million, and with additional federal grants the amount - now stands at $2.4 million. Now this may seem okay, but if you know the Quincy situation like I do, it is a different matter. The Board of $ Education owns property that at the present, although sitting in an industrial area, has a football stadium that g; % sea is 5,000 people. In addition on the same property they | :j:j: have a baseball stadium, that formerly housed the Quincy Cubs of the Three I League, and that stadium can seat $ about 2,500 people. ". :£•: $ It is true that the present structures are a bit decayed ;!•: g; because of lack of upkeep. Nevertheless it seems to me, as -A ijjj: well as many people in Quincy that the gift of a million ji could be used to update the present facilities, and use the g; other money for some other educational purpose. Not ijij: knowing the exact wording of the will, maybe they have to ijij: build a new outdoor plant. Anyway in several years teams iji: •jij: visiting Quincy should be playing football, baseball, and $ having track meets, and soccer matches in one of the iji: xj: finest complexes in the nation. It must be nice to have a §: wealthy benefactor. -jij Crystal Lake will continue to have extra curricular ijij: $ activities in the future. By a margin of some 600 votes, the ijij: people approved a slight tax increase rate last Saturday, much to the joy of everyone connected with Crystal Lake ft ijij: high school. iji; iij;! The city of Rockford will again go to the pplls on May 26 jij: jij:' to try and get another bond issue passed for extra i-ji jij: curricular activities in the five Rockford high schools. jiji jij: Twice the issue has failed in the past six months, but they jij; i;i; are going to give it another try, and hope this time it is a & i;i; winner. jij;: jij; Gary Gray's tennis team is off to a fast start. They won jiji jij; their own quadrangular last Saturday, and came back on jiji; jij; Monday to defeat Zion Benton for a 6 and 2 record at this Jiji; •:ji point in the season. jiji: jiji: Wednesday was the day for prep athletes to sign ;i| i;j;i national letters of intent to the school of their choice. Greg ft: Boyle, fine Mundelein guard, has narrowed his choices to *; jij;: Illinois, Iowa, U.C.L.A. and DePaul. We hope the young ij£ lad makes the right choice. Illinois and Iowa are his top ft jiji; choices. ;i;i jijij My buddy, John Bolton, has something cooking at ijij >jij Chapel Hill on May 1. A best ball foursome, with a buffet ijij jijij breakfast, and a shotgun tee off. ijij jijij Hope he knows what direction to point the gun. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) e^Edi Jacobs Nine images Warriors 4 To 3 By Dick Rabbitt The Jacobs "Golden Eagles" defeated the McHenry high baseball Warriors on Monday evening by the score of 4 to 3. The Warriors broke out to a 2 to 0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Jacobs with the aid of some faulty fielding by the Warriors scored three in the top of the fourth. The Warriors tied it in the fifth, but the Jacobs nine was not to be denied and won it in the top of the seventh. Barry Paulsen was the Warrior starter, but was relieved by Bob Sharp in the fifth, and Sharp took the loss. Steve Mai hit a homer for the losers. On Tuesday night the Warriors lost to Elgin 9 to 2. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT IN THE LOUNGE SATURDAY NIGHT "BOB & THE BLUE TONES" Speeders Worry Federal Agency Washington should get tougher with states that al- lowr drivers to ignore the nationwide 55 mile an ftour speed limit, a new report to Congress from the General Accounting Office says. The agency reports that the aver age driving speed on U.S. highways dropped around 5 m.p.h. during the first year of the 55 limit, but that it has been rising ever since. "Drivers have not complied with the limit because they do not believe the benefits are worth the inconveniences," the investigators concluded. GAO thinks that right now, there is no way to spotlight which states are doing a good job of reducing speeding, both by public education pro grams and by cracking down on the speeders themselves. It wants the Department of Transportation to work out measures based on what kind of penalties speeders are given, how much effort is made to sell motorists on driving slower, and the actual average speed of vehicles in the various jurisdictions. Then it wants Congress to hold up federal money for highways or law enforce ment unless the states have an improved antispeed cam paign. The GAO report admit3 that arrests for speeding have zoomed from a total of 4 million in 1973 to 7 million in 1975, but it says that ob viously hasn't gotten the mes sage across. *** PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL It. 1177 i > i y Jack Dempsey fought only 138 minutes as worfcfcham pion.
