Overall coordination for the observance is being provided by the Northeastern Illinois Planning commission (NIPC), which is now developing a long- range plan for fighting water pollution in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. Dozens of other govern mental and citizen organizations will actively participate as sponsors of Clean Streams week activities. Among those already making plans are the Metropolitan Sanitary district of greater Chicago, the Cook county Clean Streams committee, the Izaak Walton league and several of the citizens' committees that have been working with NIPC on long-range planning for clean water. Clean Streams week ac tivities also will be underway across the state May 14 to 22 as a result of a recent proclamation by Governor James Thompson. The purpose of the ob servance is to focus public attention on the plight of rivers and streams in northastern Illinois, explained NIPC Executive director Matthew L. Rockwell. "Every one of our waterways is polluted to some degree," Rockwell said. "NIPC is working with dozens of other agencies to develop a plan for eliminating sources of water pollution, but unless there is greater interest and support from the public it will be dif ficult to put the plan into action. "We have been trying for nearly two years to get a large number of people involved in clean water planning but we have encountered a great deal of apathy," Rockwell said. "We hope that Clean Streams week will raise some concerns with people and inspire more of them to take active roles in fighting water pollution." Rockwell said NIPC staff members, as well as citizens already working with the regional planning agency on clean water, will speak with any organization that would like to sponsor a Clean Streams week program. "We want to reach as many people as possible. We have films, other audio-visual programs and informational materials suited to any audience from high school students to professional engineers." Rockwell said persons in terested in scheduling programs on water quality during Clean Streams week should call NIPC's Public Affairs department at (312 ) 454- o400, extension 237 or 238. Henry Clay m Fiu-WOc-fO "I NEVER KNEW WHAT FREEDOM WAS UNTIL I SOLD MY CAR, GOT A DIVORCE AND GAVE UP TV." Buying an air conditioner? There's one number you should know besides the price* Before you choose an air conditioner, ask the dealer for its energy efficiency ratio. This number tells you the efficiency of a unit. An air conditioner with an EER number of 8 or above will be thrifty for you electrically. The EER number is computed by dividing the BTUs by the watts. A 12,000- BTU unit that uses 1500 watts will rale an 8. If the EER doesn't appear on the tag or metal nameplate, use this simple formula yourself. It's a worthwhile exercise that can pay off in electric dollar savings over the long run. Don't buy too much capacity. Surprisingly, an air conditioner that's too big usually won't keep you as comfortable as a smaller unit. So measure the space to be cooled before you go to the dealer. Also note any doors that might let cool air escape, or windows that might let direct sunlight in. The dealer will have charts to translate your notes into the right air conditioner selection. And remember to keep the filter clean. Check your owner's manual to see if you should vacuum it or wash it. In either case, a good periodic cleaning will make your air conditioner more efficient, and save you money. Another good way to save on your cooling costs is to get an automatic timer made especially for air conditioners. If you're going to be away from home for the day, you can set the timer to turn on the air conditioner an hour or so before you return in the evening. Your home will be more comfortable; your air.conditioner will get most of the day off/ and you'll save money on your electric bill. It makes a lot of sense to buy an air con ditioner that starts efficient and stays efficient. And saving energy always makes sense.
