PAGS 22-PLAINDEALER- -RIDAY, APRIL 22, 197T Area Women To Exhibit Ml' Sights On Safety At Spring Art Festival v-0*"' ^educational^ I In the spring and summer, months, gardeners, vacation ers and recreation buffs emp-^ tying the contents of gasoline cans into&a gasoline powered mower, garden tool, boat mo tor, camping stove, etc., be comes a familiar sight. Hope fully. these same people care as much about safe storage of gasoline as they do about the neatness of their lawn, the speed of their boat. etc. Each year an estimated 25.000 persons seek hospital emergencXs.room treatment for injuries associated with liquid fuels, including gasoline, kero sene. lighter fluid and char coal starters. More than 13.500 of these injuries are related to gasoline. Fires and explosions are the chief hazards associ ated with improper use of gasoline. Underwriters Laboratories offers the following sugges tions and comments for the storage and use of gasoline: • There is a distinction be tween an ordinary container normally used for storage, and a UL listed safety can. A safety can has a pouring outlet with or without a flexible nozzle and with a tight-fitting cap or valve normally held closed by spring loading. The design of the can provides for the venting of vapors if the can is stored in areas where high temperatures might exist or if exposed to fire. This venting is essential in relieving pressure buildup inside the can, thereby avoiding possible rupture and spillage. • Also, a safety can has a handle designed for safe and convenient carrying. Use only a UL listed, safety can, never a glass jar. discarded bleach bot tle or other makeshift con tainer for storing gasoline. • Filled, portable gasoline containers should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, where tipping over or acci dental damage is unlikely. Containers should not be by UL Public Information 0"ice Gasoline Is Made To Explode II placed near sources of open flames < i.e.. ranges, pilot lights, burners, etc.) or hot surfaces u.e., space heaters, ovens, fur naces, etc.i. Thus, it is espe cially not advisable to store gasoline in living areas or basements and utility rooms. • Gasoline should never be stored in a car or car trunk The vapors may filter into the interior of the car where igni tion sources exist. Also, a rear- end collision, even a minor one. may cause dynamitic re action • Never use gasoline for such functions as cleaning clothes or paint brushes, exterminat ing insects, priming carbure tors, and starting or feeding fires. Gasoline js. extremely flam mable and can readily explode when it vaporizes in the air in the presence of an ignition source. • Avoid the inhalation of fuel vapors and sustained con tact of gasoline with your skin. • Do not siphon gasoline by mouth. If it gets into your lungs, a few drops could kill you. If gasoline is accidentally swallowed, do not induce vom iting. but call a physician im mediately. • Keep gasoline locked up and out of the reach of chil dren. • Fuel out of doors and keep cigarettes, matches and small children away. When purchasing your safe ty can. look for the UL listing mark. It means that the design of the can has been tested by an independent agency with over eighty years of experience in the public safety field. toMome FASHIONING THE MODERN DAY UTILITY ROOM Back in the days of wash boards and basins, a dingy, poorly lit area seemed fitting decor for a laundry room. Despite technological im provements to brighten laun dry chores, many home mak ers still wash their clothes in a dismal dungeon. The Lindsay Division of Ecodyne Corporation points out that things don't have to be this way. The advent of multi-colored laundry room appliances, decorative wall paper, and careful architec tural planning . . . and crea tivity have transformed the utility room from an eyesore into a household showcase. Color Coordination, Compact Lines All major appliance manu facturers now offer color co ordinated washers and dryers, and a line of smaller appli ances for the apartment dweller. With compact, port able washers and dryers, it is possible to have complete fa cilities for home laundering in almost any location -- bathroom, kitchen, or even the bedroom. Compact wash ers and dryers can be stacked in a portable rack, or the dryer can be wall mounted with the washer stored be neath. Double Duty The boom in slab home construction has increased the aruor of utility room dec orators. Since the laundry rooms in these homes are generally next to the kitchen, * some homemakers have de signed laundry rooms that do "double duty." For example: a "laundry activity roOm," where space is allotted for sewing, indoor gardening, gift wrapping, letter writing, and handicrafting, as well as laundering. Washable vinyl wall cover ings and dirt resistant in - door-out-door carpeting can turn the laundry room into a play area for small children, great for keeping an eye on the kids while you're per forming wash day chores; and sturdy ceramic floors and some table height work space can make the room ideal for sewing. Plywood Bolsters Basements If the laundry area is in its traditional place -- the basement, or utility room, where there is no basement --the American Plywood As sociation offers architect con ceived plans that will dress it up. A series of 4 by 8 ft. plywood boards fashioned into partitions can hide eye sores like huge furnaces, while plywood overhead sup ported by decorative urethane beams covers wires, plumbing pipes, and heating ducts. The result is a cheerful hobby area, in which work benches, tools, books, and washers and dryers coexist in harmony. Soft Water Fashionable, Too Lindsay joined the battle against the laundry blahs by introducing the first fashion- designed water softener. The new unit brings style and flexibility to an appliance that's never received high marks on looks. The softener's contoured cabinet is made of structural plastic in an easily coordi nated harvest gold color. In addition, the unit's controls are semi-concealed and pro tected by a smoky plastic crown, leaving them un touched by visitors and pry ing children's finger. The resin tank, where water soft ening actually takes place, is covered with a decorative condensation insulator which matches the cabinet. The new design should not obscure the water softener's basic function -- to combat hard water problems, such as latherless soaping, bathtub rings, spotted and streaked dishes, scale on pots and pans, and even hard to man age hair. Soft water makes all these problems "old hat." The progress of civili zation is handicapped by little men, holding firmly to positions beyond their capacity. ARE YOU MOVING?
