One thing you can perhaps do is to persuade your husband to go with you for family coun seling Do not relate it to the problem of your fmaily. but rather to the unhappiness you both feel Ask your minister or doctor for the name of the nearest counseling service. One of the most puzzling problems that face parents is how to deal with night fears in their children. Many children who are seemingly happy, well adjusted youngsers develop one or more fears during the night time hours. At times the fears may seem to be attention getting devices or an attempt to delay going to bed, but in most children fear of the dark is real and, in the worst of circumstances, can be terrifying. Generally, the fear is specific to the point where the child fears there is a "monster in the closet," or a "man hiding under the bed " To many children, however, the fear is vague and they cannot formulate into words exactly what it is they are afraid of. yet the fear persists in spite of all reassurances from the parents. Interestingly enough, many night fears in children appear to be somehow related to an upsurge of sexual feelings in the child. To most children awakening of sexual feelings is at best a strange and upsetting experience and at worst ex tremely threatening and anxiety provoking. The sexual feelings referred to are not, of course, comparable to sexual feelings in an adult, but a normal developmental process, the beginnings of which take place in early childhood. Unless extreme, night fears seldom require professional intervention. Often, the presence of a night light or light close by the room relieves the child of the mysteries of a totally dark room. For other children, sharing a room with a brother or sister is adequate. Even a pet is sometimes enough to calm the child's fears. Next: Old Age and Senility.
