! i f :}/ A SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER-PAGE 7-WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 1977 How to instruct family 'summer safety course' Relaxing "dog day after noons" can sometimes in duce the "I'm bored, mom" blues in children out of school and away from struc tured activities. Plan an alternative to wean them from the televi sion and from shadowing mom around the house by scheduling your own sum- , mer school "classes." Special talents can be shared -- like "lovin' from the oven" expertise in cook ing dad's favorite dish. Or, on a more serious note, teach ground rules for home safety to make junior feel important and responsible. Safety experts at Gillette, makers of Captain Kelly smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, suggest offer ing "Home Safety I," espe cially designed to teach chil dren the ABC's of escaping a home fire. An average of 800 fires strike residential buildings each day in the U.S., and over half of the 11,000 per sons who die in them are children and seniors. Plan ning your escape and prac ticing exit drills in your home can greatly reduce chances for panic and in jury, and can save your life. To make sure your fam ily gets out in time, Gillette suggests teaching and prac ticing the following home safetv rules: • Because most &res that cause multiple deaths occur at night, start by installing a reliable smoke detector be tween the living and sleeping areas of your home. The Captain Kelly smoke detect or, available in both AC and DC models, works on the proven photoelectric prin ciple for the quickest detec tion of common household fires. For extra protection, Gillette recommends buying additional detectors to mon itor potential trouble spots, such as the top of the base ment stairs. • Call a family meeting and appoint a "Fire Chief." Dad and mom are natural leaders -- and even the old est child can take charge. The "Chief' stresses that ail dobrs must be closed at night -- it takes fire 10 to 15 minutes to burn through a wooden door, giving you precious moments to escape. • "Tour" your home, visiting each bedroom and pinpointing two escape routes -- the normal exiting door, and an alternative door or a window. Plan how each family member can reach the ground to safety using the emergency exit. Remember to feel closed doors tor heat -- if hot, use the emergency exit. If a win dow opens up over a front porch, instruct children to climb onto the porch and jump safely to the ground. If a bedroom window is on the second story, equip it with an escape ladder. • Decide on a meeting place outside the house -- a large tree in the yard or a fence provide an ideal place for a family "head count" after escape. Experts advise never to re-enter a burning building. • Draw up a floor plan of your house, marking regular and emergency escape routes as well as location of doors, windows, stairs and hallways. Pin copies of the diagram where children can review them. • Practice your escape plan. Have your "Fire- Chief" give a pre-determined emergency signal and have each member of the family evacuate the house. Time the exercise so that you can improve each time you practice.
