THINGS TO REMEMBER Every Sunday -- Church services - Ringwood church -- 9:15 a.m. Sunday, May 22 - Final Sunday for Church school -- Mchenry hospital. its Woman's auxiliary, and the American Cancer society will present a program on "Cancer in Women" at 7:30 p.m. May 25 in the hospital dining room, according to Victoria Behan, R.N., director of the hospital's Outreach program. The program will consist of the showing of two films, distribution of related literature, and a discussion period during which questions will be answered by surgeon Robert T. Kessler, M.D. "These short films, donated by the American Cancer society, will explain breast self- examination and the Pap smear -- two methods of early cancer detection which can save a woman's life," Miss Behan said. "For instance, when breast .cancer is diagnosed early and treated promptly, the rate of cure can be as high as 85 percent, ousnads of women are their every day breast cancer returning to lives after treatment. "However, because breast cancer occurs in about 74,000 American women each year, it is also the chief cause of cancer deaths among American women. "The whole key to over coming breast cancer, as with all types of cancer, is early detection. We hope this program will inform women of all ages that they owe it to themselves' to learn breast self-examination and to have periodic Pap smear tests to detect cancer of the uterine cervix." Mrs. Frank Gregory, co- chairman of the program for the American Cancer society, invites women of all ages to attend the program. "We all know that youth does not give anyone an immunity from cancer," Mrs. Gregory com mented. "All women should take this opportunity to inform themselves about early detection of cancer." Mrs. Gregory added that she would have available a simulated model to demonstrate how a breast tumor might feel in its early stages. Further information on the free program may be obtained by calling the McHenry hospital Outreach office, 385- 2200, extension 622.
