ON A SET of 4 -- EARL WALSH " So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR McHenry High has a fine sports program with dedicated coaches. Who could ask for more" Of course, there are times when more victories would be welcome, then we have to realize that our athletes are not facing a bunch of stationary dummies from other schools. Because Larry Lund has given us the green light on sports, reports and pictures have spilled over onto a second page. There are times when Foreman Dick runs out of space. However, he never lets us down on the important stories. Sometimes it is necessary to cut a story down to squeeze it in. The McHenry area is sports minded and Ye Olde Plain- delaer recognizes the fact. Softball and golf are ready to take over for the summer. Hope local baseball will rebound. Since I served so much time in hospitals in earlier years, my book is going to have space reserved for some humorous happenings within those walls. One such incident occurred in Rochester. Minn. The schedule said to report at a certain hour. Before checking out of the hotel, I soaked in a tub for half an hour. As a luscious, blond nurse admitted me (they always start you out with those charmers), she advised that the first thing I had to do was take a bath. A bath! I argued. » She won. "Sorry, but it is a hospital regulation ". You can be sure that second bath was once over lightly. THINGS I'D LIKE TO SEE AGAIN: My pony. Charlie Grimm play first base. Wally Smith play first base. Visited the Ray McGee home and came away with some historical items for the McHenry Library special room Don't put it off until tomorrow if you have some pictures, notes or letters that can help the committee com pile McHenry history. « I think Ray was too modest in giving Jeff Bonato some items of interest in that very fine . story. It was a fact that Ray had to go to work at an early age and was unable to attend high school. That wasn't so unusual in those early days. What was unusual was the fact that he played football on the high school team when he was in eighth grade. We had seen a picture of him in football togs so questioned the point. Schools didn't have football coaches. The captain of the team acted as coach. " Another thing Ray held back was his fine military record when he served overseas during World War One. He didn't tell us. We know. There are too many out standing deeds in Ray's life to record here "You don't hardly find them kind no more". Chicago, 111. May 14th. 1977 Dear Earl: I'm sure this is not in your department but as you are the ONLY one who ever gave me space in your Column I address this literary gem to you. (Never got to first base with the Chi. Tribune!.). In re the accolade paid to Ray McGee, may I add one small item? He was a hard man to get out of bed-hold on, it isn't as bad as it sounds. When Ray opened his store on Green St. I was nite operator for Ma Bell-Chicago Bell at that time- hours 9 P.M. to 7 A.M. and Ray frequently asked me to ring him up in the morn so he could catch the early train to Chicago. It took a lot of ringing to get him up One morn I had to recruit Charlie Frett to go over and pound on his door. I hope the Plaindealer will give equal time to my favorite four- Mr. Petesch, the Druggist, Tom Walsh, the Postmaster. Dr. Nye (ole Doc) and your Dad, Jack Walsh. They were dear GOOD men.
