r On The Sidelines by Dick lobkltt Win Junior Olympics A clean sweep over the Harrington Broncos was the tune of the day last Tuesday, as all the Warrior baseball teams emerged a winner over an old rival. It has been too long to remember when such an occasion has happened to a McHenry baseball team. The varsity Warriors won easily in 5 innings behind the 1 hit pitching of Barry Paulsen. Only a misjudged fly ball deprived the young junior of a no hitter. In the past two games against the Broncos the Warriors banged out 18 hits, yet managed only a split. With the warm weather upon us, the Warriors are beginning to hit the ball. There were several occasions this spring, when they were lucky to get more than two or three hits in a game. To complete the sweep the sophomores behind Jim Scully, and the hitting of Tim Frantz won 5 to 4, and Tony Sroka a freshmen hurled his second consecutive shutout That is indeed a rare occasion for a freshman. No need to tell you that there were three happy coaches on Tuesday evening. Wally Scott's thinclads will be at Belvidere tonight for the District Track Meet. With the Eockford schools sitting this one out, it could be anyone's title. The Warriors have a chance to send some boys downstate if they perform up to expectations. For opce the field is really not too tough. With Woodstock, Crystal Lake, Cary Grove, DeKalb, Rochelle, Harlem of Loves Park, and a few others, along with the Warriors. The McHenry County Meet will be held on Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Crystal Lake, and the Warriors will be one of the teams along with Woodstock to beat in that meet. With the fine weather we are having, look for some Warriors to set some good times and distances in the next few days. Along with all Warrior fans, we wish the team and individuals the best of luck Friday. Getting to the state track meet is in itself a goal of almost every track member on a high school team. Tommy Ludwig of Elmhurst College has the lowest E.R.A. in the C.C.I.W. conference. The former Warrior is having an outstanding season as a freshman at the Elmhurst school. Another former Warrior, Mike Roberts, at Lakeland College in Sheybogan Wisconsin, has been voted the outstanding rookie lineman of the year. Mike was a regular as a freshman at the Wisconsin school. Marty Zeller is home for the summer from New Mexico Military, where he had an outstanding two years. The former Warrior has been awarded a basketball scholarship to Baylor University of the Southwest Conference. With his military crew cut, the big fellow looks like a giant. Well the old school year is gradually winding down. By next week at this time, the long athletic seasi McHenry High will be a thing of the past. Track, tennis, and baseball all should wind up early next week, weather permitting. At that time we hope to have a summary of the spring sports schedule, and a list of where our athletes are going to further their education. Jim Scully went all the way for the sophomores for the win. The young lefty gave up 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. ^ The Warriors winning run came about in an unusual way. Teuber struck out, but when the ball got away from the catcher, he managed to get to first base. After Zeller struck out, Teuber came home from first on Don Bentz's game winning double to center. Each year our club, the Slo- Pokes Motorcycle Club, Ltd. hosts an annual Jack Hill Memorial Weekend. John B. (Jack) Hill was in his second term as a Represen tative for the 33rd. District of Illinois when he was fatally injured in a motorcycle ac cident on the grounds of the family nursery. ~ Hill, along time motorcycle enthusiast, did much to promote the sport. He was particularly instrumental in obtaining land usage in both Illinois and Wisconsin for the Slo-Pokes Enduros. He was an active competitor in both en duros and motorcross. Hill also was a founding member of the Streeterville Scramblers M.C. of downtown Chicago, and hosted many field meets and trials on his nursery grounds. He was Vice-President of the D. Hill Nursery of Dundee, 111., which was founded by his great-grandfather in 1855. He joined his father in the business in 1946. Educated at Elgin Academy, Hill later attended the U. of I. He was employed by United Airlines as a co-pilot and Lockhead Aircraft as a test pilot before World War II. He entered military service in 1943 where he served as a command pilot. He completed 81 round trips over the Himalyan "Hump" in ferry supplies to National China. He held the rank of flight officer on discharge from the service. The Slo-Pokes Motorcycle Club, Ltd. presents this event in commemoration of the efforts of Jack Hill for the sport he loved. Profits will be donated to a local charity. This two day event will feature a fun day Saturday including a wheelie contest, jumping, slalom course, plank riding, etc., and will conclude on Sunday with a motocross race. Camping will be available. First race starts at 10:30. Entries close at 10:00. These events will be held at Maplehurst Cycle Park, 11001 Wilmot Rd., Spring Grove, Illinois just north of Route 173.
