RICHMOND MAN DIES AT SOLON RAILWAY CROSSING (Continued from page 1) In other accidents, Santiago L. Gonzalez of Harvard was ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident, and also for im proper lane usage, following a two-car accident Saturday night on Rt. 14. Neither Gonzalez, nor the driver of the other car. Lance D. Gedde of McHenry, was injured in the crash which did little damage to Gedde's vehicle. The McHenry man stated that he was southbound on Rt. 14 when Gonzalez came into his lane of traffic. He added that he swerved to avoid it, but Gon zalez hit the trailer behind his vehicle that he was towing. Gonzalez originally stated that Gedde pulled out in front of him from Heritage House and hit him. Later, he stated that he was northbound on Rt. 14 at approximately 35 mph when he hit the Gedde trailer after skidding on the pavement. He added that he left the accident scene because he had too much to drink. Gonzalez was picked up by the Harvard Police depart ment. Finally, Thomas Miller of 1416 Bayview lane, McHenry, was taken by the McHenry Area Rescue squad to McHenry hospital for treatment of in juries sustained when his car wrapped itself around an electric pole at 3:30 Saturday morning at the intersection of Rt. 120 and Lily Lake road. Miller was not ticketed in the crash, which caused an estimated $3,000 damage to his car. According to the police report, Miller was unable to recall what occurred. However, evidence at the scene indicated that Miller's car went off the north shoulder of Rt. 120, traveling ap proximately 140 feet along the shoulder before crossing the roadway, and going off the soft shoulder and striking the Com. Ed. pole at the intersection of Rt. 120 and Lily Lake road. MUSIN' AND MEANDERIN' (Continued from page 1) for McHenry. "Mike" came to this community fresh out of college to be our seventh grade teacher. We liked him then; we like him now. Myrtle Ohmann was the kind of person ~ the kind of citizen-a community dislikes losing. We are only happy they choose to retain their ties with a place they will always call home. The many McHenry friends of Phil Helwig, formerly a Junior high school vocal teacher, will learn with interest that he has had published a new book, Prayers to Simplify Praying. It was our good for tune to receive an autographed copy. In the process of daily living, which seems to constantly accelerate, ther^ are few of us who could not benefit from his prayers for guidance and strength, self improvement, and better daily living. We have enjoyed his well written messages, and hope to make regular use of them in the time ahead. KAF COMPLETE PLANS FOR FIESTA DAYS (Continued from oage 1) enjoyed by everyone. As usual, members will host square groups from other parts of northern Illinois and will ask everyone to join them in an evening of fun. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the business streets of McHenry , will again take on the ap pearance of an outdoor bargain hunter's paradise. From early morning to late afternoon the merchants of McHenry will move many items to the streets in front of their places of businesses. To promote safety, the streets in those areas will be close to traffic. As in past years many of the restaurants and taverns also will move to the streets to serve the public. That same night at the park, the committee will hold its third annual Banjo-Beer night. Because of the huge crowd that attended the last event, it became a must to continue. The evening will start at 8 p.m. and will last until after midnight. The park will again be the scene of this year's fun evening. The annual Fiesta days parade will be held Sunday, Aug. 7. This year's parade will have plenty of musical units as usual besides the many other marching units and beautiful floats. The starting time of this year's parade is being moved up one half hour to 1:30 p.m. The parade should last about one hour. Immediately following, on Riverside drive between Pearl and Broad streets at the city beach, the firemen of Company One will hold their annual water fight championships and will host many fire fighting units from various parts of northern Illinois. From late morning until after the water fights, the McHenry Jaycees will again sponsor a barbequed chicken dinner in the city park the day of the parade and water show Sun day, Aug. 7. Police, CB'ers Team For Safety Although the citizen band radio craze got its impetus from motorists trying to ad vise each other how to stay out of the clutches of high way patrolmen, the troopers are increasingly teaming up with the mobile radio fans in the cause of road safety. The latest state in thp trend is Georgis, which has blank eted the state with Trans portation Dept. monitors tuned to channel 9, reserved for emergency messages. The most scientific study of the way cops and CB'ers can work together is being car ried out in upstate New York, in a $125,000 project paid for mostly by Washington. A total of 150 patrol cars and 15 police troop headquarters have been outfitted with transmitter-receivers. They will scan all channels, with special emphasis on 9. The five measures which the New York test will use are: e Whether help gets to ac cidents and other emergencies faster; • Whether unsafe driving conditions are spotted sooner; • How fast traffic clogs are discovered and cleared up; • How many "criminal acts" are seen and reported; • Whether citizens get more involved in highway safety; By the end of this year, the New York results should tell the federal government whether to expand the plan of cooperation with CB'ers to other states. Emergency Services Of County Accredited The McHenry County board has received its accreditation certificate for the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster agency, Richard Klemm, County board chair man, said recently "Accreditation allows McHenry county to take part in matching and full funding programs of the Defense Civil Preparedness agency," he explained. John Shay of McHnery is director of the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster agency. That agency has the responsibility for all unincorporated areas of the county and must accredit the twenty-five local cities and villages when they comply with state and federal requirements. Shay conducts extensive training programs for the many people involved in the public's safety--police, fire department and Rescue squad personnel, for example. In late April, Shay conducted a hazardous materials seminar at McHenry County college. The purpose was to help local fire and emergency service personnel become more aware of how to respond to emergencies when a hazardous material is involved. Shay cited the number of r a i l r o a d s c r i s s c r o s s i n g McHenry county with trains daily transporting hazardous materials through populated areas. Klemm reported he has received two certificates which he presented Shay and Don McCullough. The certificates recognize their completion of a state seminar on emergency preparedness at Macomb in March. "Breathing" Machines Needed For Loan Closet Residents who have breathing machines in their homes no longer in use, are urged by the DuPage-McHenry Lung association in Woodstock to consider donating the machines to the association. M. Kendall Bird, Crystal Lake, association president, said that his group maintains a loan bank of such machines for patients with emphysema or other breathing ailments, so that the family physician can determine if such a device is helpful to the patient before he goes to the expense of acquiring his own. In many cases, the association has learned, needy patients have no insurance or other benefits which would help with this burden. Often known as "handi-vent" or "Bennett", the machines are factory rebuilt and sterilized for the next person's use/ the expense being borne by Christmas Seal donations and memorial contributions to the Lung association. "We do hope the public will respond," Bird said, "because our loan closet of these machines is nearly depleted." For further information, in terested persons may phone the Lung association in Woodstock.
