It tells of a people brave and proud who fought for what they believed, no matter what the rest of the world thought, even if they were wrong, like the Con federates, going out to fight a lost cause. After the war was over, they still had their pride, that was the one thing you couldn't take away from them. BETTER SPORTSWEAR. ELGIN AND CRYSTAL LAKE JANE PAGE, PERSONAL SHOPPER today, for that is what America stands for, a chance for pride of person; to be proud of our selves, our families, our homes, our lives. "America, the land of golden opportunity." Many people's ancestors came here, like mine, seeking a better life. They heard of a land with streets paved of gold. Money was plentiful and life was good, so they said. When they arrived here though, things were a little different. Where were these streets of gold? Where was all this money going to come from if you couldn't get a job because you didn't speak the language? The immigrants had it hard. There was discrimination, poverty, and scapegoating. The immigrants were blamed for a lot of things. They were poor because of the jobs they got, manual labor. The Irish in the 1840's working on the railroad are a good example of what people can do if they really want to. These people had to fight to make it up the ladder to social acceptance, from laborers to Presidents. Not wars, but poverty, prejudice and the feeling of worthlessness were the battles they had to fight. One has to work very hard not to be prejudiced against, people have to get used to them. There is still prejudice in this country, and I believe there always will be, no matter how hard people might try. It might not be race, but the poor, the elderly, the very young. All these people really have to do is prove the stereotype wrong and they are on the road to being accepted In what country but this can a person do that? Start out poor to become a multi-millionaire. From one who couldn't afford to buy books to becoming President The United States of America, that's where! The land of capitalism and equal rights for all. "The land of the free and the brave" is what our national anthem proclaims What a great thing to inherit- the gift of freedom. The founders of our country kenw what they were doing Freedom was more important than their lives. "Give me liberty or give me death " was Patrick Henry's motto The other patriots felt the same way. They didn't chicken out and say, "The cause for freedom will have to wait until Britain is willing to give it to us." They went out and took it By signing the Declaration of Independence they were signing their death warrant. Like Benjamin Franklin so eloquently put it, "Either we all hang together Or we'll all hang separately." That still holds true today, like the saying "United we stand, divided we fall." - I believe this country can make it through anything From thirteen little colonies to the world's most powerful nation, we've come a long way in only 200 years. The only way we won't last another 200 is if the world ends first But the spirit of the nation will still live on, the heritage of bravery, freedom and peace. Seek Volunteers For Little City Campaign Little City, a residential training and habilitation center dedicated to the personal social and economic development of the mentally handicapped and the emotionally disturbed, is asking for volunteers to donate time for fund raising. The program, known as "Illinois Smiles for Little City", will be conducted Friday, Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13, throughout the Greater Chicago area, in over 150 communities which have granted permission for the activity. Volunteers will be stationed on busy street corners, in shopping plazas, at commuter stations and other areas of heavy pedestrian traffic. They will hand out sheets of "Happy Face" stickers and accept donations. It is hoped that the two day fund drive will raise1 enough money to enable Little City to construct new facilities so that additional children may be admitted. At present there is a three-year waiting list for children who could benefit from Little City's homelike surroundings and unique programs. Established in 1959, Little City is a national, non-profit, non-sectarian, residential community tor the mentally handicapped located on 56 acres of land in Palatine.
