PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1977 On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbitt Well the long athletic seasons are over at McHenry high school. From the middle of last August when Bill Day had his football squad out in the hot sun, and "Hutch" had his "Running Warriors" taking to the hills, right down to Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors closing out the season Tuesday, it has been quite a year. Although there were not many championships, there are still a lot of fond memories. The hundreds of boys who participated in the various athletic events for McHenry, in the not too distant future, will cherish those days, when he was asked to give it one more try, get an extra yard, make that free throw, get a takedown, keep up with the pack, swim a little faster, pump those arms, get to the net, sink that putt, get a hit. Yes fellows, those are the days you will remember for years to come. I, too, will cherish some of those memories. After 28 years of coaching, I have decided not to put on the uniform next season. No more cold days at McCracken field, no long bus rides to Zion and North Chicago, no long doubleheaders at Lake Forest, no more friendly insults from Jerry Rogers and Lee Mai, next year I will be thinking of all of these things as I putt out on the 18th hole, and this I will CHERISH. J Rumor has it that the five remaining North Suburban schools will join with 4 schools from the O'Hare conference. Libertyville, Zion Benton, North Chicago, Lake Forest and Mundelein all from the North Suburban will join with Fenton, which is located in Bensenville, Lake Park of Roselle, Elmwood Park, and Maine North. Plans had been made for the five North Suburban schools, to join forces with schools from Kenosha, and Racine. However the Wisconsin schools do not offer freshmen athletics, and a difference in rules seem to be the obstacle. Travel in this conference along with the Wisconsin schools attitude on girl's athletics seem to be a stumbling block. A meeting will be held on Friday to try and settle this issue. Other schools asked to join in the confab are Niles North, East, and West Leyden. Niles East will close in 1980, so that leaves them out of the picture. This new conference, if and when formed, would begin in the seasons of 1978-79. McHenry, Crown, and Crystal Lake along with Dundee, Jacobs, the new Crystal Lake school. Cary Grove, and Woodstock will form a new conference. Although it is not official as yet, the name of the new conference will be the Fox Valley Conference. Look for a lot of new formations of conferences in the near future. Growing pains and travel, mostly the latter are the main causes. Expenses have to be kept down, and one of the main ways is to restrict the travel of athletic teams. It is about time someone came up with a bright idea. A tip of the fedora to Wally Scott, Bill Day, Gary Collins, and Dan Boland, along with the McHenry high track team. Closing out the season by winning the county meet was a sweet way to finish the season. The horses were not in the barn this season, yet the young lads never gave up, and really came through in the County Meet. Congratulations to Janet McKinley a senior gal at McHenry West. This young lady won a field hockey scholarship to Western Illinois university. It covers full tuition, plus a sum of three hundred dollars. Quite an accomplishment for the young lady. A thanks on behalf of the coaching staff to Hans Heidler, the genial manager of the varsity teams this past season. He was johnny on the spot, and a big help to the Warrior staff this past season. Some graduating seniors who have participated in athletics have made known their college choices are: Brain Miller either Lakeland college or Rock Valley, Bill Hurckes at Monmouth, Steve Mai to Iowa Wesleyan. Marty Phillips is going to attend William and Mary, Sean Thomas, and Keith "Rosey" Rosinski, MCC. Marie "Snyd" Snyder and Rich "Bird" Long, University of Illinois, Mike Rabbitt, University of Wisconsin at Madison. • Terry Reilly playing No. 3 singles for Elmhurst college has a 4-1 record thus far as a freshman. To date he has defeated Rockford college 6-2, 6-1, Aurora college 6-3, 6-3, Carthage college 6-1, 6-0, Concordia college 6-3, 6-4. Terry's only loss was a 3 set 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 match to Northwestern. Congratulations to Steve Mai. The young senior was awarded the Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award by Bill Blankenhom Athletic Director at the Annual Tribute night. Steve also was honored as the Most Valuable Player on the baseball team this spring. Well, that wraps it up for another yer. The good Lord willing, we will be back in August for the fall season. Western Open Notes Doug Ford, winner of the 1957 Western Open golf title, holds a notable line in the Western Open record book. He has played in the last 26 Western Opens and is entered in the 1977 Western Open to be played June 23-26 at Butler National Golf Club in Oak Brook, 111. A1 Geiberger will defend his Western Open golf cham pionship (June 23-26 at Butler National Golf Club) as pro golf's newest "millionaire". When Geiberger won $5,659 with an eighth palce tie in the Greater Greensboro Open this season he became the 13th man ever to pass the $1,000,000 mark in career pro earnings. Butler National Golf Club, designed by George Fazio, will give spectators many good vantage points during the 74th Western Open, to be played June 23-26 at the suburban Oak Brook course. Numerous slopes and mounds, similar to those at Augusta National, site of the Masters, will give fans a fine view of the action. ° Steve Mai Named Outstanding Athlete Steve Mai son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mai was named the outstanding athlete at McHenry high school the past year by a vote of the coaching staff. The young senior won All Conference honors in football, was a member of the wrestling team, and was the sparkplug on Ken Swanson's baseball team this spring. The honor was well deserved, and it couldn't have happened to a finer young gentleman. | Clearing $• A STAND UP TRIPLE for Warrior Brian DiBlasi after he drove the ball to deep right center with the bases loaded. Brian drove in four of the Warrior six runs as McHenry blanked Crown 6-0, in the final game of the season. Warrior pitcher Lee Steinsdoerfer struck out 9, while walking 4 during his one hitter performance as the Warriors increased their conference season at 8 and 8. season overall record 17-12 ended (STAFF PHOTO- WAYNE GAYLQRD) McHenry High Thinclads Win Metric County Meet By Dick Rabbitt "Coach Wally Scott's McHenry high track team closed out the season Monday by winning the McHenry County Meet held at Cary Grove. Cary Grove has the only metric track in the area, so all times and distances were recorded in metric. The Warriors were led by Mike Burman winning both the 1500 and 3000 meter run, Denny Useman winning the long jump, Mike Peterson in the high jump, Dan Schaefer in the 100 meters, and the 1600 meter relay team of Peterson, John Weingart, Rick Talbot, and Bill Murgatroyd. The 400 meter relay team of Murgatroyd, Schaefer, Useman and Brad Potts finished 2nd. DIVOT DOLLS M.C.C. When Willie Smith won the first Western Open golf championship at chicago in 1899, he won $125 of the tour ney's total purse of $300. First place money in this year's Western Open, scheduled for June 23-26 at Butler Golf Club, is $40,000, with a total purse of $200,000. The results of the second and final round of the two-week Team Event for the ladies at McHenry Country club found the team of Leisten-Nolan holding their lead and attaining the win in Class A. A close second in the same class was the team of Cooney-Wilkins. Liz Nolan ran a fifty-foot putt in to hold par on No. 2 green which helped get the adrenalin going for her and Mil Leisten. In Class B the team of Holmes- Johnson also held their lead of last week and emerged vic torious. Second palce went to the team of Weber-Stamer. Big upsets in Class C put the team of Guntner-Weyland in first place, followed by Koehler- Rode in second place. A reversal of positions in Class D ensued when the team of Spengel-Miller surged ahead to gain first place and found Wakitsch-Boyer in second place. Individual happy shots were scored by some of the gals. Ethel Koehler chipped in on No. 4 while Mary Kenton sank her approach from ten feet out on No. 7, one of the toughest holes on the course. Marilyn Reihansperger used only 12 putts on the front nine. But, the gal who came stomping back to the clubhouse with the biggest announcement was our blonde bomber, Carol Cooney, to proclaim that she shot an 88 (that included a deuce on Par three No. 9). All skill. The last day of this month will find the gals participating in Flag Day and WWGA Pin Play, as well as starting Ringer. A busy day. The report from In- tersuburban Team Captain Mil Leisten informs us that the McHenry gals womped Sunset Valley when the Valleyites came to McHenry last Friday, the twentieth. They hope to do the same to the Lake Bluffers when the McHenry gals go there on Friday the third of June. On June 7 and 14 the women will be involved in a Calcutta event. Following that on the twenty-first they'll all be shooting to Beat the Champ and also qualifying for Match Play which will begin the twenty- eighth of the month. NIt looks like a busy month ahead. May the weather remain as beautiful as it has for the last two weeks. Happy golfing!
