JUNE 10. 1977 Hot Springs offers spa plus lots of outdoors It was back in 1541 -- more than 400 years ago -- that Hernando DeSoto and his party of Spanish conquistadors discovered the Valley of the Vapors, the site of present-day Hot Springs, Arkansas. Searching for gold, the Spaniards may not have realized just how valuable were the 47 hot springs that gushed forth in the valley. But they did rec ognize the beneficial re sults of bathing in the springs, and lingered for a time in the valley. Louisiana purchase Indians believed that the springs were heated by the breath of the Great Spirit, and established the area of the springs as a natural meeting ground where all could gather to bathe in the sacred and • healing waters. The land was held alter- nately by Spain and spurgeons This Father's Day Treat Him to Fruit of the Loom Underwear! RTE. 120, McHENRY. ILL. France until 1803 when Thomas Jefferson nego tiated the Louisiana Pur chase. Word of the healing qualities of the waters spread, and people suffer ing from a wide range of afflictions began traveling to the thermal springs to bathe in their curative waters. In 1832, Congress set aside the springs and four sections of land as the first U.S. Reservation, and in 1921 the reservation be came the country's 18th national park. Origin of springs Through the years, sev eral theories have been formulated to explain the origin of the springs. To day, it is believed that rainfall percolates through the rock strata to the tor rid depths of the earth, where it is heated. Years later, the thermal waters are discharged through a geological fault in the earth's crust. The dis charged water may be ancient, having an aver age age of 4,430 years. Hot Springs National Park comprises 4,000 acres and is entirely surrounded by the city of Hot Springs. It includes historic Bath house Row, a beautiful, magnolia-shaded prome nade, and two display hot springs. In addition, the park includes five, moun tains, crisscrossed by hik ing trails and scenic roads that provide panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside. Camping facilities Camping* facilities are available at Gulpha Gorge Campground, two miles northeast of Hot Springs, off U.S. 70B. Here there are 57 campsites which are available on a year-round basis. During the summer, naturalist programs are presented at an outdoor amphitheater every week night with illustrated talks on such topics as Indian foods, medicines and pot tery making. - Beyond the national park, the Hot Springs area has a wide range of ac tivities to offer outdoors- men. Water sports are available at Lakes Cath erine and Hamilton just outside the city, and at gigantic Lake Ouachite only a few miles to the west. Mid-America park Just west of the city is the new Mid-America Park, a unique multipur pose concept which will include a vocational-tech nical school, an industrial park, a museum to be named the Mid-America Center, and the Mid- America Amphitheater where each night during the summer, "Hernando DeSoto, Conquistador," an outdoor drama, enacts the story of DeSoto's explora tions and discovery of the Valley of the Vapors. For those who thrill to the sport of kings, Hot Springs offers outstanding thoroughbred racing from early February to early April and culminates in the week-long Racing Fes tival of the South. The famed Arkansas Derby is run on the final day of the meet. Many winners of this prestigious race go on to try their luck at rac ing's Triple Crown events: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. The city of Hot Springs retains its quaint ambi ence of Victoriana along with up-to-date medical facilities and modern ho tels.
