Emma Reed ft Family AUTO TIPS By PATRICK KBLLT 6-17 If you own a General Mo tors, Ford or Volkswagen ve hicle, take note! The National Highway Traffic Safety Ad ministration (NHTSA) says ita recent investigations of al leged safety defects involving these vehicles have revealed problems which "represent a threat to their (vehicles') safety." The GM vehicles involved include 2.2 million 1976 Chev- rolets, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Buicks, Cadillacs and GMC trucks. The problem: failure of the power brake booster stemming from the result of gasoline vapor condensing in the booster can. WONDER LAKE, ILL 60097 815-653-2061 m m REALTOR the booster diaphragm to de teriorate and rupture, with a consequent loss of power brake assist and the necessity for the driver to use abnorm ally high brake pedal forces to stop the vehicle. Thus far, two minor acci dents have been reported to General Motors due to the failure of the power brake booster. However, the possi bility of future serious acci dents exists, according to NHTSA. The agency advises owners of these 1976 GM vehicles who experience partial or total loss of power brake as sist to take their vehicles to their dealer for inspection and correction. The Ford vehicles involved include an estimated 192,068 1976-1977 Ford Econoline and Club Wagons without instru ment panel padding. The problem: the possibility of the plastic instrument panels on these vehicles shattering, leaving sharp edges which could lacerate and puncture vehicle occupants. Thus far, there have been two reports of noncolliaion accidents and one low-speed collision accident in which it was alleged that the instru ment panels shattered and left sharp edges. In two cases, lacerations were al leged to have occurred to either the occupant's arm or face, NHTSA reports. The Volkswagens involved include an estimated 370,200 vehicles of the following mod els: 1975-76 Rabbit and Sci- rocco; 1974-75 Dasher; 1973- 74-75 Audi; 1975 Type I sedans (Beetle); and 1976 Type II vehicles (Vans). These VW vehicles are all equipped with similar throt tle control systems. Owners are complaining that design weakness of the system leads to broken throttle cables, with less control over the vehicle's speed. The 59 owner com plaints include nine alleged property damage accidents, five of which involved inju ries, according to NHTSA. The agency requests all owners of these GM, Ford and VW vehicles who have experienced any of these problems to report the details of their experiences, in writ- mg, to the Office of Defects Investigation, National High way Traffic Safety Adminis tration, 400 Seventh St. NW, Washington, D. C. 20690. Motorists may also report these problems to the NHTSA Auto Safety Hotline by call ing toll-free, 800-424-9393 (for Washington, D. C. resi dents, the number is 426-0123).
