PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JUNE 17. 1977 Introducing Queen Kimberly... There was Laughter and there were Tears. There was Joy and there was Disappointment. These are the ingredients of any beauty pageant, and they were all present in the judging of Miss McHenry Tuesday evening in the American Legion clubhouse. Kim's poise and charm added to her beauty in bringing her the coveted crown. S T A F F P H O T O S B Y W A Y N E G A Y L O R D Health Department 100 Years Old On July 12, the Illinois Department of Public Health will mark its one-hundredth birthday. In observance of the event, Governor James Thompson has issued a proclamation declaring the week of July 11 as Public Health Week in Illinois. When the state health department was "born", it had a staff of three people and a two-year budget of $5,000. Its purpose was: 1) to license physicians in an effort to rid the state of the nearly 4,000 "quacks" who were practicing medicine; and 2) to assist local communities' attempts at improving sanitation in order to halt the spread of dis (In 1917, the licensing of physicians and certain other professionals was transferred to the newly created Depart ment of Registration and Education.) Today, the Illinois Depart ment of Public Health employs some 1,000 professional, ad ministrative, technical and clerical workers who provide a broad range of services which protect the health and welfare of the entire population of the state. Although sanitation is still a very important public health program, the perimeters of public health concern have moved outward during the past century. The complex health needs of today could not have been envisioned a hundred years ago. In order to meet the changing public health needs of today, the state health department administers or supports more than 100 dif ferent services, and ad ministers an annual budget of more/than $70 million of state federal money. In what ways does the state health department protect health and well-being? There is hardly an area of human ac tivity with which the state health department's family of programs is not concerned.
