PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JUNE 17. 1977 Employer Tax Credit For Hiring Disabled "Passage of the Tax Reduction and Simplification act of 1977 offers employers an extra tax credit for hiring disabled individuals who are participating in or who have completed a rehabilitation •J program as clients of the Illinois Division of Vocational Rehabilitation," said James S. Jeffers, director of the state vocational rehabilitation agency, 'it's not a pay-off," Jeffers said flatly, "but an Now't tha tima to chack you Screens THt BUGS W»U SOON ME BUZZIN - ANO YOU'LL WANT TO KW THEM OUT) Wt HCPAIR All KINOS OF SCKfNV WOOO O* ALUMINUM ntAMCS. The extra credit can also be claimed when disabled veterans and „ long term unemployed are hired. Continuing to explain the provisions of HR 3477, Jeffers urged employers to remember that the extra 10 percent tax credit for hiring a disabled individual can be claimed only if the new employee was referred to the employer by the FORMAL WEAR RENTALS for ALL OCCASIONS 6<Jl SStwd ,tk tiwbiM 1?14 X. Green St., McHenry state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. "This provision will benefit all concerned," Jeffers said. "IDVR will refer to the em ployer job candidates equipped to do the available job. If we do not have a qualified applicant, we won't make the referral. By working with IDVR," the director continued, "the em ployer can also take advantage of our experience in modifying job sites and in correcting other environmental barriers which limit or prevent the hiring of qualified disabled persons." "A cold hire is virtually an unknown quantity. Before we recommend a client, we do a plant survey and a job survey. yVe spend whatever time is necessary with the employer and with the immediate supervisor. When the referral is made it's truly "selective placement" - one individual recommended for one job." IDVR can also assist an employer with an affirmative action plan and with recom mendations pertaining to en vironmental barriers which limit or prevent hiring qualified physically disabled persons. "Since the extra credit is a hiring incentive, naturally it will increase employment opportunities for IDVR clients. We hope it will also serve as an incentive for disabled persons who are not clients of the agency and who could benefit from our services to come in and apply," Jeffers concluded. The state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation provides counseling, testing and job placement services to the physically and mentally disabled. The agency also can provide medical, diagnostic, educational and technical training services.
