Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 By Estelle Atwell It was persistence on the part of an individual plus the cooperation of the police departments of two com munities that restored a small dog to its original owner. The- individual was driving in a congested area of Elgin when he noticed a tiny confused dog running back and forth on a V*V street with heavy traffic. Its chances of survival didn't look very rosy. He parked his car and rescued the little fellow and as soon as he could phoned the police to report the incident and give a description of the dog. It wasn't long afterward that the police phoned him saying a call had come in reporting a small dog of this type lost. Given the name and phone number he called the people. Descriptions matched and it seemed as if these were the owners, but when he asked the name of the dog the reply was they hadn't given him a name yet as they had had him for only three weeks and got him in Fox River Grove. On a hunch he phoned the Fox River Grove police and asked if they had a record of a lost dog of this description. Current records showed no such dog listed but he asked the officer to check records three weeks back. A check proved that this was the owner of the dog. She was a very happy and surprised person to recover her pet especially since it had been gone over three weeks and insisted on giving him a reward fcy^all the trouble he took to locate her. He would not accept anything for himself but suggested she could offer her reward to Helping Paws, and her check was turned over to them. This case shows how im portant it is to check police departments in the event of a pet loss. Each report is a matter of record, and in this case the search for the owner was successful simply because of these records and the fin der's persistence. A regular monthly board meeting of Helping Pws will be held Thursday evening, June 14. Attendance is open to readers.
